Does anyone know if there exists in one book, or in one series, a
collection of the fairy tales we associate with the Brothers Grimm,
but in their pre-Grimm versions?

I'm looking for something by title and author, published within the
last, say 40 years, currently in print, OR at least easy enough to
find listed on ebay every so often.

Thanks,

Rick

Doubtful. Some didn't really *have* pre-Grimm versions, others came
from a wide mixture of locations, and few of them would have a single
definitive earlier version anyway. Jack Zipes' edition of Grimm is one of
the best for identifying which tales had which origins, and it would be a
good step in pointing you to other locations. The collection you suggest
is not really the sort of thing folklorists would incline to, because
what the tales have in common is what the Grimms did to them, so if
you're not doing the Grimms' versions together there'd be little reason to
use Grimm as the guiding principle.

You can easily find Perrault collections, which include variants of
several of the tales that turned up later in Grimm, but that's just a
handful of the many Grimms' tales. Ditto Basile and the Pentamerone.

For perspective on how a lot of tales might have been before the Grimm
or Perrault/Cabinet des Fees versions, you might take a look at
Calvino's ITALIAN FOLKTALES and the Pantheon RUSSIAN FAIRY TALES, a
translation of Afanasev who was the Russian Grimm, more or less.

Calvino is the Italian Grimm, but worked around mid-20th century and
with a more scholarly approach. He worked from serious folklore texts
printed around 1880, iirc.

GRIMMS' FAIRY TALES - I must be in my second childhood because at 76 years of age I just got around to reading Grimms' Fairy Tales. My copy of the Brothers Grimm doesn't tell what country they were from. The book just says it was translated. Does anyone know what country..
