Check out "Goyescas", by Enrique Granados.

I think there was a music done of "The Picture of Dorian Gray", but I
don't recall the composer.

Arthur Custer (b. 1923). He has a piece titled "A Little Sight Music"
that was conceived for performance in museums & galleries. Apparently
the performers are supposed to improvise based upon their reactions to
the paintings/sculptures, etc. that surround them in the performance
space.

Since you asked in rec.arts.books, as far as composers and poems,
Schiller's "Ode to Joy" is the EU anthem.

In this time zone, I've had all my coffee for the day. Come to think of
it, it will be gin and tonic in a few hour's time!

No matter, I think Chattering Machine isn't a bad title either.

Mussorgsky, "Pictures at an Exhibition", is the obvious example.

Mahler is said to have based the macabre third movement of his First
Symphony on a painting of a traditional German subject, the hunter's
funeral.

Hindemith, "Mathis der Maler", is based on the life of painter
Matthias Gruenewald.

There are many others.

No, that's the title of the person who keeps posting these sophomoric
lower-case questions.

One of the most famous is Rachmaninoff's tone poem "Isle of the Dead" based
on the XIXth Century painting by the same name by Swiss German artist Arnold
Boecklin.

George Benjamin's "At First Light" is based on a Turner painting.

Feldman's "The Rothko Chapel" is based on a Huston installation of his
paintings.

And I can think of a good example of the reverse; Brancusi's head of
Socrates was his response to hearing Satie's "Socrate" . They were
close friends in the 1920s up until Satie's death.
