Dear all,

Has anyone come across any novel that includes (or mentions) convicts
transported to Australia? I looking for any narrative like this, but
particularly those by Irish and English authors or set (initially) in
Ireland. Any help is much appreciated.

Cheers,

d lindsey

A Google search on "novel convict deported to australia" should turn up
a few.

Well there's Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations" and Rolf Boldrewood's
"Robbery Under Arms".

I was going to mention "Under Capricorn" but I believe Hitchcock's movie
was based on a play not a novel.

Start with Richard Flanagen's
Gould's Book of Fish: a novel in twelve fish
(Grove Press 2001.)

English Passengers by Matthew Kneale has good parts about convicts quite
detailed and well researched. Peter Carey has it as a theme in "The true
history of the Kelly gang" as well as another of his books that I can't
remember.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I've heard Marcus Clarke's For the Term of His Natural Life recommended,
but haven't read it myself. It's about a convict in Tasmania (IIRC).

I think at least one Sherlock Kolmes' story involves this, but I cannot
come up with the name of the story right now.

One may as well begin with David's letter to rec.arts.books:

Speaking of which, there's also Peter Carey's recent pastiche, _Jack
Maggs_. It's the story of Great Expectations retold from the
transported convict's point of view. Five star reviews all over the
place and it's out in paperback.
