With Halloween round the corner, what are your current picks of the 5
or 6 scariest scenes (whatever your own definition of scary is) you've
seen so far in cinema.

Aliens - 2
Audition (haven't watched it yet)
Cujo
Hellraiser (not sure that's the title of the one I liked)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Nosferatu
The Tenant
Twilight Zone-The Movie

Communion -Adapted by Whitley Strieber from his book about his alleged
contacts with aliens, Communion dramatizes a story all the more
compelling for the author's insistence that it is true, complemented
by Christopher Walken's enigmatic performance as Strieber. The film
begins in October 1985, as Strieber is living in New York City with
his wife Anne (Lindsay Crouse) and son Andrew (Joel Carlson). He is
hunting for new book ideas without making much headway. He spends his
days pacing around his apartment, thinking out loud or videotaping
himself as he improvises bits of dialogue. It is soon decided that a
vacation is in order, so, with their friends Alex (Andreas Katsulas)
and Sara (Terri Hanauer), the Striebers head for their cabin in
Upstate New York. In the middle of the night, an illumination descends
on the cabin and surrounding forest, causing Strieber to wake up
abruptly. In the semi-darkness of the cabin, he is able to make out a
long face with narrow, tear-shaped eyes quietly observing him from a
corner of the room. The next morning, he has forgotten -- or been made
to forget -- the whole experience. He even shrugs off Alex's and
Sarah's concern about "seeing lights" outside their bedroom window,
claiming to have slept through the event. Back in New York, it becomes
evident to Strieber and his family that something unusual did happen.
He begins to have powerful hallucinations, and, after an inconclusive
medical examination, he is encouraged by his wife to seek professional
help from psychiatrist Janet Duffy (Frances Sternhagen). During
hypnotic regression therapy, Strieber's lifelong contact with the
"visitors" is brought to light, as well as the details of his more
recent encounters. Still unable to accept these revelations, he
returns to the cabin alone and finally communicates with the visitors,
discovering that, although they are unable to reveal their true
identity, their purpose may be to act as agents of personal
transformation for himself and for others. An interesting and uneven
film, Communion is bolstered considerably by Christopher Walken, whose
role in the film, though appropriate for the subject matter, quickly
transforms into a thesis on his own eccentricities as an actor.

In an incongruously mediocre movie, that scene, a horror moment which
has been filmed often (and by earnest talent) over the years, was
rendered wonderfully here -- well enough to make you at least
temporarily forget all the others...

To an extent, it's to be expected. The same expectation that awaits
genre-specific upcoming releases. If previews and preproduction leads
are favorable, it's [so as to be] good within the parameters of
audience expectations. Been reading Audition reviews, that's all,
which give it some footing. Not that couldn't be wrong and be
affected differently, or, then again, right, for a subtle in-your-head
directorial approach to terror and control. A Misery but more off
beat, stranger and less direct. Have you seen it? Would it be more
direct than some of David Lynch's material, apart from being perhaps
another worthy assay or aspect terrorism as appertains to social
convergence? Didn't he just release something or another, also?

Scariest scenes?

No particular order

1. At the end of "Psycho", when Norman's face is obscured by the rotted
face of his dead mother.
2. The first shark attack in "Jaws".
3. The blood test in Carpenter's "The Thing". I've seen that a dozen
times or so and still jump.
4. Badham's "Dracula", when Van Helsing finds Mina in the mines below
the graveyard.
5. Seth's final morph in "The Fly"
6. When the Alien drops behind Brett while they're looking for that damn
cat.

Psycho never did it for me. Jaws was a rip on sharks that are
actually sort of neat if played with carefully. Remakes The Thing is
pretty good as is The Fly, just kind of utterly different from the
originals, borderline overboard and trashy with all the extra gore
sort of special effects . Seconds are better, because Aliens got the
big budget, like the second Terminator, and were developed extra right
plus with care. Jaws/Psycho probably matched them for draw, but not
even nowhere near scope. And I read Briam Stoker's Dracula (along
with 1984). That's a certain one, and two for one on two and three,
for two out of six. You'd better get it up.

No, I'd think scripts of a random character left apart from trite and
tediously generated conventions.

Assumptions being less a certainty no one is capable unequivocally to
ascertain, that much I wouldn't deny you.

Decoupage stems from Dada movements, stemming from Fauvs (the Beasts)
and Pointalism, Cubism and Expressionism. There's a movement and
literary corollary going back to an interested group Huxley belonged
to (Brave New World). Probably suiting a TV production, as I recall
he left England for an ashram in the hills of California. Nice to see
it remade, still in all, if mind control is of interest.

1. The opening sequence in "Night of the Living Dead" (goon's hands pressing
up against the car windows).
2. Opening sequence in "Testament of Dr Mabuse"

um...drawing a blank.

The "window" scene in THE WOMAN IN BLACK is the only one that springs to
mind.
