Hi,
I'm new to Anne Rice books, but received Blood and
Gold for a present recently and would like to know
about "those who must be kept" Who are they?

Any reviews of Blood and Gold would be
appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the world of Anne Rice... unfortunately, it's decaying into
oblivion... However, Blood and Gold is an excellent book... at least I think
so.
"Those Who Must Be Kept..." oh gosh... Watch "The Queen of the Damned: the
Movie" that would be the true crash course.
FOR THE BOOK'S EXP.: in a perfect world, i would say you should read "The
Vampire Lestat" and "Queen of the Damned," before you read "Blo. & G." And if
you ever plan to read those two, then Blo and G. will spoil those.
Basically, "T.W.M.B.K." *were* Akasha and Enkil, pharohs of Egypt before the
pyramids.
They picked a fight with Maharet and Mekare (two redheaded witches,
flesh-eaters). Well, a blood-thirst spirit didn't like the bullying, so he
attacks Akasha and Enkil, by cutting little holes into their body, to drink
their blood. Then the Spirit goes inside Akasha, thus making her a blood
thirsty creature and the first vampire. Enkil is converted to vampirism, and
together they went on a big quest nearly irradicating the Egyptian population.
Ever heard the legend of Isis? Anne makes that the legend of Akasha.
Eventually, they "get bored," and go into a sleep-like coma. However, if any
harm comes to them, then it effects all vampires. Case in point: a vampire
puts TWMBK, aka mother and father, into the sun, and all vampires are burnt,
severely, many die.
Now, I'm not exactly sure what all blo. and gold says about TWMBK...so i
won't go into what happens when Marius gets them... I've read all the V.C. at
least twice, but the facts have become a blur on which book says what.
In the late 1980s, i believe, Lestat awoke Akasha, the Queen of the Damned,
from her sleep. She sucked Enkil dry. Then she went on a big quest, and
almost irradicated all of her "children," and male humans. There's a big fight,
and she dies (has her brain eaten by Mekare...that redheaded twin).
How's that for TWMBK 101? It's very hard to discribe them, this morning.
But, if you're even remotely enjoying Blood and Gold, i would recommend you
stop reading it, and start at the begining of the V.C (just remember, the books
from "Tale of the Body Theif" to "Blood and Gold" are for extra credit. I, for
the most part, liked them. Many did not.)
Hope this helps,
Michael

First of all, if you really are interested in the story then start from the
beginning. And most importantly - Don't watch the movies before you've read
the books. They don't stick to the books very well. Trust me, the other
books are well worth the read.

The Vampire Chronicles:
*Interview with the Vampire
*The Vampire Lestat
*Queen of the Damned
*The Tale of the Body Thief
*Menoch the Devil
*Merrick
*Blood and Gold
*Blackwood Farm
*The Blood Canticle

Enjoy!

Thanks for replying. Yes, I would have liked to have read the earlier
books, but I received Blood and Gold as a birthday present, recently, so
am reading it as my first Anne Rice book.

I saw the movie "Interview with a vampire" and didn't like it. (too
much killing for my liking)
Still, it's all fascinating and very well written, so perhaps I'll read
all her books one day.

Thanks again for filling me in!

I have lots more questions but will save them for another time. The
main one being, is there any real romance to these stories?

I don't quite understand it all.

Harmony

I would never recommend that someone, who has never read the VC, start
getting acquainted with them by watching that movie. I loved
Interview, but Queen was awful..about the only the book and the movie
had in common was the title. In the movie Akasha is portrayed as evil,
in the book she isn't so much evil as very misguided in how she is
going about trying to create a Utopia free of violence, albeit a
self-centered Utopia.

I would suggest starting from the very beginning and reading Interview
with the Vampire. Lestat's story is better when you have Interview
under your belt, especially, at the end when he starts giving you his
side of why he did some of the more specific things he did in
Interview...like why he killed Frenier, as well as, those two whores.
Without Interview the reader isn't even going to know who Frenier was.

That isn't quite correct. There was a rebellion by some of Akasha and
Enkil's subjects over Enkil's political policies, and after the
assasination of the king and queen, Amel enters through the stab
wounds Akasha sustains. After she becomes a vamp she saves Enkil by
letting him drink her blood so Amel enters him as well, thus creating
the first two vampires in the world.
They don't really go on a quest. Their thirst is so intense that, in
an attempt to relieve it, they start creating other vampires. At one
point in time there is a war among the various vampire groups that
destroys many of them. I don't remember anything about them
irradicating the Egyptian population on a quest. I mean, why would
they do that? There would have be nobody to worship them as gods,
which is the image they were trying to create around themselves.
Take care,

Hi Harmony,

I'm gonna do a spoiler thingy so scroll down:

Well, Those Who Must Be Kept are basically the "parents" of all vampires.
Should they perish, then all vampires perish: hence the need to "keep" them.
They are the source from which all other vampires sprang. I think I'll leave
it at that and let you find out the rest for yourself: Anne tells their
story way better.Smile But those are the basics. Dunno if you've seen Queen of
the Damned, -it tells a thing or two about a thing or two, though it doesn't
come anywhere near what the book was like- but it's a novel you might want
to pick up if their history interests you.
Take care,
Jo
