Nothing with this kind of weight has been spit out of the wire at The
Sportsdesk since, well, I can't remember.
Needless to say, I was just as shocked as my compadre over there and anyone
else. The whole thing was amplified by the fact that I was half way through
"Fear and Loathing in America", a collection of Thompson's Letters and a
very personal one at that. I felt like I was getting to know him through
that book, and even contemplated heading to the Woody Creek Tavern this
winter to see if I could run in to him by chance.
His latest efforts for ESPN were one step shy of complete garbage, and it
occurred to me more than once that that might be part and parcel to the why
of this whole thing.
Of course, his reasons will likely always be his own, but it's worth
mentioning that the modern Thompson couldn't have been too thrilled with
where he had ended up. The Doctor worked so hard to expose and degrade the
fierce and corrupt evil that he saw in America's overlords during his
heyday. Thompson never made a whole hell of a lot of money as a writer, he
did it with razor sharp and brutal honesty because he felt it had to be
done.
What a strange and brutal trip it must be to see in the current thieves at
the wheel a rude, twisted and atavistic caricature of the same swine that he
worked so hard and went to the brink of madness (and back?) to unseat. How
can one be expected to cope with something so ugly? An amplified failure in
one's life's work - daily all over the headlines. That's some fiendish irony
for a news and politics junkie that didn't get much sleep.
This warped and demented joke of a world is plenty enough for me to deal
with as a 24 year old sportswriter with a day job. I can't begin to imagine
being 67 with a busted leg, an artificial hip and some recent, dismal
assurance that anyone worth sharing a drink with is certainly doomed. It's
no wonder his work had fallen off so much. If you read between the lines, I
dare say that there is an air of defeat.
Anyone interested is welcome to join me for a glass of wild turkey tonight
in Vancouver. Send me a PM. Johann, hit my cell.
Jeez. I just keep thinking of Juan, Sandy and Anita. hell, even the sheriff.
There's little point in arguing about the fact that this is the way he
wanted it, and we should all be as lucky to go out the way we choose. So
Long, Hunter.

Lord, The Good Doctor will see you now.

Yours in Fear and Loathing,

Azul
