Sorry to bother you with this passage (page 3

, but for some reason I have
trouble understanding the logic of it...
At some point (middle-end of page), Colin says: "The thing is, I think I'm
trying to psych myself up to decide against them 'cause I think I ought to,
and that makes me feel sort of ashamed."
Would anyone be so kind as to read that page, put the previous passage in
its context and answer the following question: is Colin referring to the
dogs when he says "THEM"? And does "decide against them" mean "decide to
have them killed" in this context?
I'm pretty much sure that's what it means, but when I don't "feel" a
passage, I prefer to ask to make sure I didn't get the whole thing wrong .
