My girls adore Gurgi. Especially in the silly voice Mummy use when
reading Prydain aloud.

Gurgi was, be far, the best part of the Disney flick... That
much I think they got right...

<shrug> We make it on weekends when we have the time. It has the
most amazing nutty flavor and the texture is thick without being
gooey. We had steel-cut oats at a very high end Sunday brunch once
and were sold. We had slowly gone from instant, to long cook
(5-minutes tee hee), to 25 minute oats over time. It really was the
next logical step.

Nope. I'm just having to wait for him to "discover" them on his own. He
came home from school today and told me he was reading The Lion, The
Witch, and the Wardrobe--I had already given up on trying to get him to
read that series.

Now I just have to find the boxes with my books and get them onto a
shelf!

You can get Steel Cut Oats at Whole Foods. Either packaged or in bulk.
My mom took some home with her the last time they visited. Personally,
I'm a crass 'Merikan when it comes to oatmeal. *G* When I was a kid, my
mom would make oatmeal the old fashioned way, with regular oats, not
even quick oats, and I would HATE it. When I spent the night at my
grandparents, my grandfather would make me instant in the mornings, and
I loved it to bits! Besides being insulted, she thought I was nuts. Now,
I could make regular oatmeal and still enjoy it, since I've discovered
the key is that I have to add a certain amount of salt and make it very
thick to get it how I like it, but I'm perfectly happy with quick oats
and 90 seconds in the microwave. LOL

I caught the carrot show flipping through, one afternoon, and was
fascinated. I even saved it for Jesse because I knew it would be right
up his alley. A little science, a little history, a sock puppet or 6, a
kitchenaid mixer with flames painted on it, and you can learn to cook
too? Perfect! *GGG* We have most of the latest season sitting on the
Tivo, but otherwise we've seen them all. Even without ever trying his
recipes, I've picked up tips and ideas that have helped me.

Pfui. I'm now miles and inconvenient miles (64.6 of them, at
minimum, according to a WWW store search) from any Whole Foods
store. Perhaps sometime I'll try the recipe with rolled oats and
cross my fingers.

Odd coincidence -- tonight's cooking experiment is a black bean
and chipotle peppers soup from the Whole Foods Cookbook.

I confess, I'd never really compared the two. :> Like 'em both,
eat 'em both... though I usually add something flavoring-ish
(cinnamon, etc) to plain ol' oatmeal.

Before my mom had a daughter living in California, she'd get them, and
other specialty baking type things from
http://www.kingarthurflour.com/shop/landing.jsp?go=DetailDefault&ref=t...d=3488&

In fact, she'd order from the catalog before they were ever on the
internet.

Oddly, my local store does carry some items from that company.
Perhaps I shall examine those shelves more closely when next I
visit the store.

Except for tea, I haven't yet gotten to the point of ordering food
for myself via the 'Net. Close. But not yet there...

My kids and I agree that Wilder is the best Wonka, but they seem to think
that the music in the Depp film is better. Kids, go figure!

Gene Wilder, no question. Johnny Depp looked way too much like
Michael Jackson for me to feel comfortable with his character in a
children's flick!

On Thu, 25 Jan 2007 08:38:45 -0500, Tristaan stomped through my
brain with:

>Okay, votes:
>
>Who did the best Willy Wonka? Gene Wilder or Johnny Depp?

Replying to myself:

It depends, for me. Gene Wilder did a much lighter harded
Wonka, definitely more kid friendly. Brought out the jolly part
of that particular character with a little bit of cynicism "Oh,
no. Please. Don't. Stop."

Meanwhile, Depp played the reclusive side of Wonka VERY well,
throwing in his own darker interpretation of the eccentric guy
with the jaded view of the world outside of his factory walls.
Still with some great humor thrown in, "Mumbler!" or "THis is the
anamatronic puppet burn unit...It's relatively new."

So, depending upon my mood, I'd take either one.
