Know what you mean, Tris. BTDT, got the kids to prove it! I remember
what a stretch it was to find appropriate, challenging reading
material when the girls were younger! Now (aged 10 and 12) it's a
fair bit easier ... except that my girls are FUSSY about what they
read and won't read 'just anything'.

Athena is tackling Lord Of The Rings, interspersed with PTerry when
she gets bogged down in the language. Ishtar is reading her way
through the few Oz books I own (Wizard of, not Australiana), plus
Little House series which she adores, especially the ones about
Laura's daughter Rose.

<nodding> I remember my girls going through that strong pre-reading
phase around 3 or so. It made Mummy (and Daddy) very proud but their
teachers hated it because they were already so far ahead of their
classmates when they started in Reception.

Our next challenge is High School which Athena will start in January
of 2008...

Welcome home, Boss. I've kept the kitchen running while you've been
gone.

I share books now with my 7-year old Smile

My 10-year-old would LOVE some of the books on my sci-fi/fantasy
bookshelf, but unfortunately he is at an age where anything Mommy
recommends is immediately sent to the reject pile.

The only problem with reading those books is that you might not want to
give her ideas, unless you actually have room to keep a horse in the
future...

My daugther loved the Terhune books I ordered for her last fall (she's
really into dogs right now). The James Herriot books were a little too
hard for her last year, but it's probably time to try them again (All
Creature Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things
Wise and Wonderful, and The Lord God Made Them All).

She is reading the Harry Potter books right now. She started Half Blood
Prince yesterday--soon we'll be able to talk freely again (keeping her
brother from discussing in front of her what happened at the end of that
book has been a chore).

She further clarified that she has been in discussions with "a major
Hollywood entity" who have a good track record and she feels has the
right attitude towards the project. They wanted a screenplay, so she's
written one and is now tweaking the first draft before she submits the
second one to them.

Assuming they like it and the project goes forward she predicts late
2009 into 2010 as when it would likely hit the theaters.

But I'm so thrilled that there is interest and that she's writing the
screenplay herself. Smile

My problem with Beverly Cleary is that why on earth would I want to take
a child who is reading at an advanced level, learning great grammar and
vocabulary, and give them stuff with barely literate sentence structure
and lots of not-quite-right words? (Unless I'm thinking of some other
author-- Junie B Jones?)

Yeah, ok, parents are running the risk that they will need to both
research and explain zoning laws. Unless they actually live in an
area zoned for rural activities, in which case they will need to
research the costs attendant on owning a horse and compare them to
the hours of work it would take to pay those costs.

Details, details.

(Or parents could take my father's approach, and Just Say No.
Kids get told "no" a lot; they're kinda used to it.)

LOL Yeah, she just MIGHT want a horse... although, she gets farm
exposure at my parents place and that seems to feed the need.

Ah, yes! Redwall and Prydain. I think I'll give those a shot.
I have the original Redwall book and I used to be hooked on
Prydain after I saw the Disney attempt at "The Black Cauldron".
