....of hype, and of the price of not doing your homework:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3590640143
This item--the first issue of the comicbook ($8.95 cover price) based on a
character created by Michael Chabon for his 2000 novel, The Amazing
Adventures of Kavalier & Clay--just hit the stands on Wednesday. And, while
it may not be available through the publisher's website, it is widely
available through other online comics sellers and is nowhere near sold out
in B&M stores--at least, the local shop where I got mine still had several
copies yesterday.
Why will people believe anything they read, without checking it out?
(That's rhetorical--I can think of several reasons.)

Same thing is happening with *The Passion of the Christ* movie tie-in, e.g.:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3589508757" target="_blank">http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3589508757</a>
There is also a brisk trade in reprints of Anne Catherine Emmerich's *The
Dolorous Passion of Our Lord*--which helped inspire Mel Gibson--a work
dictated by Emmerich to the German Romantic poet Klemens Brentano and
published in 1833 (Eng. trans. 1862). I hope to God that the following was
just a mistake or a put-on--$1000 for an otherwise worthless ($10-$20;
although there is only one copy on ABE at $250--as far as I know there is no
good reason for that price and the ABE seller's description is highly
misleading) BCE/reprint edition:

Just an additional piece of information for any Chabon collectors out there
(Hi, Ann!): If you're not plugged into the comics grapevine (as I am not)
you might not be aware (as I was not) that Chabon made his comic-book debut
late last year, contributing a story titled "The Strange Case of Mr.
Terrific and Doctor Nil" to JSA All-Stars #7 (dated January 2004--released
November 2003).

Jon,
Gosh, maybe its worth all of this money because, as the seller states in his
listing, the author is a Pulitzer Price winner, and everything has its
price....

Thanks, Jon.
As you surmise, I don't keep up with comics but you can bet I'll be out
today looking for both of these. Any idea what I should pay for the
first one? I assume from your post I should be able to get the new one
for cover price...
I've even bought a couple of the Ayelet Waldman "Mommy mysteries".
They're light and sassy (contraction of smart-assy?). Anyway, she's
pretty clever. Guess she'd have to be to keep up with him.
Did you ever find out if he really posted here a couple of years ago
when we were discussing A Model World?

Last year, when I wanted to see Dark Horse Comics series featuring Tarzan
meeting John Carter of Mars, I had good success with:

If you have any well stocked comics shops in your area, you might be able to
find it for at or near the cover price of $3.50. I had to call 4 shops in
St. Louis, but I finally found a copy for $4.50; you might do even better.
It also comes up a couple times a week at eBay, in the Collectibles>Comics
category, and, although often grouped with other JSA issues, the bids are
pretty reasonable.

Jon,
Many thanks for your research. I feel sure I'll be able to track down
both of these. Now would they be considered "B" items or what?

Oh.....my......God.
I was kidding, of course. And you are, too, right? I mean, you do
realize I know what sassy means and I don't actually believe it's a

Never mind me Ann. I only pasted the contents of a link.
Jerry Morris kindly went to the trouble of transcribing some
very illuminating definitions and examples of "saucy" from the
1785 edition Johnson's Dictionary. Unless that is, he owns an
unusually large scanner, and a fairly tolerant and ligature
friendly OCR programme.

A site I found said that the second issue of The Escapist is due next month,
the compilation of issues 1 & 2 in April, #3 this summer, and #4 in the
fall. Then again, the first issue was originally scheduled for last
December.
