I have a copy of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt,
signed. On the copyright page, I cannot find a number line, only B9. The dj has
FPT on the front cover, and it says that it was printed 1/94. The copyright
inside the book is 1994. It was printed by Random House New York. ISBN
0679429220. Thanks.

That is the number line--what's left of it. 19th printing.

The true first edition/first printing states First Edition, below the number
line 2 4 6 8 9 7 5 3 (no letter).

I think this is the same book where I got stuck. The number line seemed to
start with "1," but I forgot that Random House requires the "First Edition"
slug. My "1" (one) was actually an "I" (letter), making it a 90-somethingith
printing I think, lol.

I have personally seen later printings for sale as first editions at
reputable book fairs. (Was it fraud, stupidity, or oversight?)

I've seen the same thing in bookstores, and I think it's pure ignorance. A
seller sees a "1" in the number line and concludes that the book must be a
first printing. A really strange one, though, is a copy of "Midnight" at
ABE listed as a first, with the seller citing as proof the presence of "0"
(zero) in the number line. Gee, wouldn't that be the correct number line
for the ARC? Wink
