Did the song, "Into the West" by Annie Lennox for RotK, have as it's lyrical
basis anything written by Tolkien? If so, can you point out where they are
written? Thanks.

"Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
The night is falling
You have come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore "

The lyrics are *not* from anything in Tolkien, but the *imagery* is.
Remember the recent controversy over Gandalf's description of the "far green
country" to Pippin in Minas Tirith? This was taken from a dream Frodo had
early on, and was a description of the West. I think that this particular
imagery must have resonated very strongly with the writers of the script.
According to the liner notes on my soundtrack, the song was done by Fran
Walsh, Annie Lennox and Howard Shore. I'm guessing mostly Walsh for the
lyrics. I love the song, and find it hauntingly beautiful, and capable of
chasing away earworms.

Thank you! I gather you are definitively stating, "None of those lyrics
originated with Tolkien in any strictly written fashion".

I too think it is a haunting piece, soon to be overdone.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I found something similarly haunting in the title of a record by Tyrranosaurus
Rex. I bought the record because the title looked like something out of
Tolkien: My people were fair and had syk in their hair, but now they're
content to wear stars on their brows."

It wasn't from Tolkien, but I'd like to know if it comes from a book or poem.

'Syk in their hair'? Sounds awful.

Not from Tolkien literally, but they remind me of the following:

 > "Lay down
 > Your sweet and weary head

This reminds me of the Christian hymn 'Away in a Manger'!

 > The night is falling
 > You have come to journey's end

'Journey's end' reminds me of variants of 'The Road Goes Ever On'.
Specifically the one the Bilbo sings in Rivendell after the WotR. I am
also reminded of the Walking Song sung in the chapter 'Three's Company'.

 > Sleep now
 > And dream of the ones who came before
 > They are calling
 > From across the distant shore "

The 'calling from across the distant shore', and 'the ones who came
before' reminds me of Legolas's Song of the Sea, where he sings and asks
the grey ship if it hears the voices of his people calling, his people
that have gone before him.

If there are more lyrics from the song, there may be other resonances
(conscious or otherwise) with Tolkien's writings. IMO, Tolkien's
writings are much better and far more poetic.
