Post subject: Question for the experienced Feist readers
Archived from groups: alt>books>raymond-feist (more info?)

I am new to Feist and actually fantasy in general. I had read Tolkien
and CS Lewis when I was younger and started the Robert Jordan Wheel of
Time series recently(last 5 years), on a suggestion from a friend. The
same friend lead me to Feist. I have enjoyed the WOT series, however
waiting years for the next book to come out has driven me to swear off
ever starting a series which is not already complete. Which brings me
to my question.

Is the Riftwar Legacy series integral to the later series'? (Krondor's
Sons, The Serpentwar Saga, Conclave of Shadows, Darkwar Saga)

With Krondor:The Crawler and Krondor:The Dark Mage books still
unreleased, I am not going to start the series until they are released,
and I want to know if that will greatly affect my enjoyment of the
later series' that are already complete. I assume that skipping over
the books wouldn't make that big of difference, because they were
written later, I just want some other peoples opinions.

Thanks for the input.

KJ

Each saga builds on the last, so IMO it is best to read those in order. The
other books add a layer of depth to the later books, but they are not
integral to the current story. For instance, in the Conclave of Shadows,
events in the Krondor: Legacy are mentioned, but you don't have to know what
happened in order to understand Conclave. I plan on going back to read
those after I am done with the current saga. As soon as the darn library
gets Exiles Return I'll be set.

I would definitly make sure that you read the "Empire" trilogy by Feist and
Wurtz immediatly after the Magician trilogy. Not only are they concurrant
and interrellated, they often explain events referred to in the other. The
"Krondor" series is never likely to be completed due to licencing issues, as
I understand it, so you may as well read what's been done. From there, the
King's Buccaneer and then the Serpentwar series. After that you can fit the
rest of the series in just about any order.

The nice things about the different series is that they can stand alone, if
needed. But knowing the backrounds and seeing how certain characters evolve
through the decades is pretty neat. One of the enjoyable things for me with
Mr. Feist's work is that the characters do grow old, change, and evolve, and
eventualy die, to make room for other characters and their stories.
Everything is not just stagnant in time.

Thank God he writes like that, otherwise you would have a universe like
Goodkind or Jordan. IMHO they are totally boring after the first couple
books. Which I've read from both...
