I would have to say that the one that sticks with me the most... and the one
that I still get excited when re-reading is Rise of the Merchant Prince. I
love the luck and skill rise from rags to riches exploits of Roo. Talon
has similarities but didn't get into the numbers quite as well as Rise. >> Stay informed about: Your favorite book. |

Murder in La Mut!
Zero plot, characters one-dimensional and indistinguishable one from
another, and, anyway, who could take a book seriously when it has a
character named Lady Mondegreen?
I don't believe that Raymond wrote a word of it, and my family have been
warned never to buy me another Feist so-called collaboration (Janny W
excepted, of course). I almost went into a decline when I tried to read
it. Fortunately TotSH came along and it was like a spring of cool water
in the desert!
I suppose I should apologize for entering this group on a bum note....

Honoured Enemy was up to normal Feist standards in my opinion.

I agree, I couldn't even finish Murder in La Mut. I liked Jimmy the Hand
but had some problems with the logic of the ending. Honoured Enemy may be
one of the best Feist books of all time. The development of the characters
was amazing as were the battle descriptions.

I couldn't agree more. Don't waste time and money on that disaster
of a book. I almost felt kind of betrayed when I read it. - But as with
you, TotSH was the next I read, and I *almost* could forgive R.F.
for putting his name on that... thing.

I would disagree in part. I'm a fan of Joel Rosenberg's Guardians of
the Flame series. I found it to be more of a fun fantasy adventure and
quick read. I sometimes want/need that versus more heavily developed
plots and characters. For instance, when I'm going to be interrupted
often and would otherwise lose the groove.
To me, the feel of Murder in LaMut was much more Rosenberg than Feist
and the characters Pirijol, Kethel, and Durine were right out of the
Guardians of the Flame books. If you haven't read any of those you have
missed a bit of background that others of us have.
Incidentally, I didn't have a clue what the Lady Mondegreen reference
was to before this thread prompted me to go look it up. I took it as
just another name and didn't try to read anything into it.

I didn't know about it either, but then found out that my other favourite
author has written a bit about it:
http://www.brightweavings.com/ggkswords/mondegreens.htm
And if you did not like Murder... Try Jimmy the Hand. That book cannot
even decide where the story is taking place...
