i just finished silverthorn and although i've read it many moons ago. a
question just stirred inside me. what is the conflict between the
temples of midkemia? it sounds like everyone's scared of the ishapian
faith.

Not scared, as much as very respectful.

This is a case of dramatic irony. The reader has a great deal more
information than 99% of the characters. Only Pug, Nakor, Miranda, etc.
throughout the stories know as much as a few, very highly placed
clerics.

Lower level clerics of the lesser gods, for example, barely know
anything about the Controller Gods. They know of Ishap as a shadowy
figure that somehow gains a lot of respect, but where he/she/it fits
into the order of things, they have no idea.

You have to get pretty high up the ranks of the lesser orders to really
get it.

At the lower orders, there is a perception of lots of rivalries,
oppositions to missions, etc. There are lower level martial orders
that will attack members of opposing temples on sight, for example.

So, the view "from above" that the reader gets is far different than
what you see at the lower levels.

I'll be touching on some of this in the Darkwar Saga.

Best, R.E.F.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

If I remember correctly there are several things to consider.

1. The economical reason
More followers mean more income for the tempel. And so there is a healthy
competition. This is not that different to what happend after the
protestants where established.

2. The power reason
A Priest is only as powerfull as his god allows him. So the more powerfull
the god is, the more powerfull the priest becomes. In Midkemia the power of
the gods depend on how many people believe in them (I am simplifying things
here, but Ray will correct me Wink ). So every priest tries to get more
followers to pray to "his" god.
Ishap is one of the 7 greater gods. He is/was the one who balanced
everything,. good and evil. Primary Arch-Indar and the nameless god. After
the chaos wars he died/vanished, but you basically can't kill a god and
since people still pray to him he still is alive. (this is where my memory
is a little blurry).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

There is one funny story about Silverthorn. I bought this book many years
ago and borowed to someone (I think sister) and it got lost. And now I
bought 2 copies and intended to give one to one of my friends (a girl) and
it was funny because when we were at the bar I put both books into my
suitcase because I didn't know that I already put mine there (both had red
covers etc...). When I got home I realized my mistake and phoned her haha -
it's still at my place I will give to her when I see her again. Funny and a
little bit hmm strange Smile
Great book I must read it again.

If I just had a chance to collect all those sovereigns from a plagued house
in Betrayal at Krondor (game) Smile
