looking fo the title of a book

im looking for the title of a book. the book is very old and i read it
a long time ago. the book is about a young girl that falls in love
with a young man that works at a grocery store. well they fall in love
and get married and have children. the boy gets a job working at a
railroad (i think) and he gets a leg injury.... thats as far as i can
remember

How serious was the leg injury?
Did he buy a parrot with his compensation money then hop around saying "ha
harrrr Jim lad"? if so I might have an answer for you : )
