Was re-reading _Letters_ this weekend, and two things seemed
unexplained by introductory or text notes:
What does "sc." stand for (used by Tolkien many times in his letters)?
Obviously "v." stood for "very" and there were a few others easily
deduced, but for the life of me I can't figure out what "sc." means.
Also, who is Amy Ronald? She's obviously someone well-known to him
and held with great affection.
Thanks to any and all who can clear up my confusion!

Service Corporation?
No, seriously. Could you give an example of the context in which you see
it?

I can, but not until later tonight. Don't have the book with me right
now.

A wild guess: "sc." may stand for the Latin "scilicet", which means
"namely".

From memory, a fan who wrote to JRRT and who's surname prompted him to write
back. There's no explanation in 'Letters' I'll have to consult other
possible sources at home tonight. >> Stay informed about: Question from Tolkien's Letters |

sc. is an abbreviation of scire licet: (it is permissible to know).
viz. is an abb of videre licet: (it is permissible to see)
They both seem to mean the same thing. I don't know about sc. and how
it is used.

That was my first-ever posting to the Tolkien newsgroups, IIRC. As far as I
can work out, she was just a correspondent who had a name in common with
JRRT, although they obviously did end up on affectionate terms.

That seems to be the consensus. I thought she might be a
daughter-in-law or something of that ilk.

That is an easy mistake to make - I had wondered it myself - but she
certainly doesn't appear anywhere in the family strees. ISTR another letter
to her being sold a few years ago, and the seller saying something like "...
letter to a friend ..."

I believe it means "specifically." Not entirely "logical", but
understandable in context.

It is an abbreviation for a Latin word, 'scilicet', meaning 'namely,
specifically'.
