And I think it's a first printing, too. Alas, it's in less than stellar shape,
but I'm not too worried, as I'm never planning on selling it. Smile The front cover
is missing, and the front page is a little ragged around the edges, but the rest
is good, and the back cover is still there. And it's a riot for me to read. I
only started reading Larry about 12-13 years ago, so to look at the back and see
"One of the brightest new lights in the science fiction galaxy..." is a riot.
Just had to share a wonderful find. Smile

I would think it would be relatively easy to find copies; abebooks.com
(my favorite source for online used books) shows about 180 copies listed.

I prefer the hunt of the live bookstore. Used bookshops in corner squares, etc. Smile

Oh, I do too. If I'm looking for a particular title, though, I go to
abebooks.com or one of the other online book repositories. For
browsing, though, nothing beats a visit to a real used bookshop -- you'd
be surprised at the things you're shocked you don't have if you don't
see them. (In fact, I just recently rediscovered a very good local used
bookshop which I thought had closed.)

You know, the internet has taken a lot of the fun out of looking
for old books. It reduces book searching to the level of dynamite fishing,
which is a pain if the searching process is part of the fun.

I'm reminded of the old Doonesbury strip in which Jimmy Thudpucker,
then a fantastically wealthy rock star, takes up stamp collecting. I'm too
lazy to go through the archives but the process was something like "Hello,
George? I'd like all the stamps from Belgium. Thanks." [click] "That
was fun. I think I will do Morroco next."

The one Niven I have never seen a copy of (I don't care about ABE)
is _The Shape of Space_.

Well, if the goal is to find a particular book, then the online
repositories are exactly what you need. If the goal is to browse
without any particular book in mind, then obviously going to an actual
used bookstore is best. It's about what your goal is; if it's browsing,
rather than finding a particular item, then obviously being physically
present around a lot of books is better.

I got a copy of it some time ago through, I think, an eBay bundle. I
was under the impression at the time that it had a story or two in it
that I hadn't read before; that turned out not to be the case.

(abebooks.com only has 55 copies.)

Yeah, I think so. For some reason I used to be under the impression
there were one or two stories in _Shape of Space_ that hadn't been
republished anywhere else.

I have a copy of that; it appears to be a 1st printing (pretty good
shape too). IIRC, I found it in a used bookstore about 30 years ago.

Exactly. I KNEW I could get a copy via the net, but finally coming across a copy
for a quarter in a pile of old paperbacks was a thrill. The hunt made reading
"The Ethics of Madness" and "The Handicapped" all the sweeter. Smile
