Well, I've got two pans of fruit leather heating in the
oven, and I suspect I did something wrong. Not sure how I
could have, given the simplicity of the recipe. Puree
fruit, pour in plastic-lined pans, cook at lowest possible
temperature with door of oven cracked open. 4-6 hours
later, I'm supposed to have leather.
(Grand fun to have an open oven baking on a 100 degree F
day, BTW. Evening, to be precise, since I refuse to bake
diddly-poop for hours and hours without open windows, in
summertime.)
I do have fruit leather, in a rather traditional,
abused-leather sense. Cracked like the surface of a
non-sandy desert. Not sure it will "peel easily" off the
plastic like the recipe says. And it has been cooking for
7+ hours, so far.
Not quiiiiiiite like the fruit leather in the stores.
Please tell me I'm not the only person to wreck a "simple"
recipe this year.

'Simple' recipes are actually the easiest to wreck, usually because the
recipe is so 'simple' that the recipe writer assumes that you will know
some 'obvious' steps without having to be told.

After thinking about it for a while, I think I put down too
thick a layer of fruit puree. Not sure how I could have
made it thinner, though. I tipped and tilted to spread the
pureed fruit out, and it seeeeeemmed plenty thin.
Huh.
I just froze apricots today. Puts my "what to do with 12
lbs of apricots" problem off to some other day, when I won't
be so tired of cooking apricots. :>

Well, Mummy Az suggested it...
I believe it is *supposed* to turn out looking like a "fruit
roll-up". Dried fruit, pureed before drying so you can dry
it in sheets or strips.
Mine looks more like a magnification of a shattered windshield.

Sometime in the future...
m_thomas: It's a new dish I invented. It's called "fruit
brittle".

<big grin!>
Thoughtfully... I'd try it, but I suspect fruit alone won't
crystallize. The brittles I've eaten all had a high sugar
concentration; sugar crystallizes well.
I bought a dehydrator today. I'm gonna have to dehydrate a
looooooooot of apricots to make the dehydrator cost less
than the dried apricots I buy annually. But it appears I
have a tree that will be producing pounds and pounds of
apricots annually...
I have trouble finding dried fruits with no sulphate. Maybe
I'll start drying my own. ;>

I have a dehydrator and I was never able to get fruit to turn out like
the nice soft pro-packaged stuff. Mine always came out hard as a
rock. <sigh> Oh well, can't be an expert at everything I suppose.

A coworker had a dehydrator they were not using and wanted to get rid
of, now we have a dehydrator we are not using, but not ready to get rid
of, yet. We want to try it before we bye-bye it.

I tried drying tomatoes in a dehydrator once. I then had to throw the
whole darned thing away because of the mold. Somehow, it just didn't
do what it claimed it would.

Well, with braces and a dislocated (kinda) jaw, i'm sticking to soft
