A clever professor (not, regrettably, me), took the encryption algorithm
used by the main character in Neal Stephenson's _Cryptonomicon_ (towards
the end of that massive tome, so many readers may have pooped out before
they reached that scene), simplified the algorithm a bit, and wrote it up
as a homework assignment for a programming course. He provided a write-up
of the encryption technique, plus some compiled programs that encrypt /
decrypt using, one presumes, the written-up technique.
I encrypted a few messages, and gave my students the description of the
decryption algorithm plus instructions to write a program to decrypt my
mystery messages.
Unfortunately, if a student writes program code to match his description,
said code will not decrypt messages encrypted using his compiled programs.
Ooops!
Since it could simply have been that the students were doing something
wrong, I had to whip up a new implementation of the encryption/decryption
programs. Perhaps all my students plus myself are making the same errors.
Whatever, at least we're all consistent. And, now, a couple of my
students have succeeded in decrypting my (newly created) mystery messages.
Whew.
So. Very educational homework assignment. Not, regrettably, exactly what
I *intended* the students to learn. (The Professor is an idiot! seems to
be one reasonable conclusion from this debacle. sigh.) But educational.

There ya go. I suspect many people did not. I have not even started any
of the books he wrote after _Cryptonomicon_ -- even longer, and a series.
I can just about cope with one novel of that length. A series?

But a teacher could always hope the students don't notice a goof like that.
With a homework assignment they are required to complete to pass the
class? Hard to not notice a major problem with that!

I don't know what it's like over in Rightpondia, but the conclusion I
came to during my university course was that anyone who was actually
halfway competent at CS was either earning WAYYYYY more money being a
proper analyst/programmer or was smart enough to earn money for the
university without requiring any teaching courses.
Therefore CS prof = idiot! became my default setting.

Gee, thanks.
That's pretty much the way things are perceived as running here, too. But
what if what you want to do is teach? Analysts don't teach. Research
professors who spend all their time on research don't teach. If what you
want to do is combine teaching and computing, well...
And, yes, I know I had one heck of an income potential drop when I chose
this path. I could be earning WAAAAAYYYYY more, doing something else.

See default in my previous definition. Start by assuming CS profs are

Or unpleasantly?
I haven't actually met any CS profs who were idiots. I have, however, met
some who are surprisingly bad at clear communication. They knew what they
wanted to communicate, but getting the ideas out of their own heads and
into the students'... that didn't work so well.
Regrettably, I have no idea how good I am at communication, from the
student's point of view. I'm always inside my own head when the
communicating (or lack thereof) is going on!
I may need to steel myself and borrow a videocamera to tape myself in class
again. sigh. If you've never seen yourself speaking in public, watching a
videotape of yourself can be very educational. Not, generally speaking,
very good for the ego. Generally leaves a person with the urge to crawl
into a corner, murmur sadly, and consume lots of chocolate. Which is why,
in spite of the fact I know I ought to, I haven't taped myself in a long while.

Yep, that's that the videocamera would be for. Though it would be more
useful if I could tape what is going on inside student heads.
(Comprehension? Confusion?) Don't have the technology for that!
Ever seen yourself on video? Very disheartening. (My nose is really

Never, EVER view yourself on a regular set if the video was shot with a HD
camera. Unless the person knows JUST what they are doing when they adjust
the video for playback. A REGULAR camera "adds" 10 lbs, an HD camera can
add 20 (or more).
