Yeah, really. I do have a temper. I think because it was a somewhat
polarized argument. Several people supported one side, several on the
other. I think I've calmed a bit in the last 4.5 years.

None, not in the sense that I idolize or worship anyone. There are
plenty of people, Tolkien included, whom I think having made the world
better for having lived.

Reading, particularly non-fiction. Playing primitive computer games.
Voluntary work for the Danish Muscle Dystrophy Foundation, mainly in summer.
Skydiving, if I can get off my fat bleep and start jumping out of a
perfectly good airplane again. The industrialization of space. I have an
ego page on http://hjem.get2net.dk/JonLennartBecksEgoPage .
> What do you dislike?:
Too little physical space to do my job at work...
> How did you discover the works of J.R.R. Tolkien?:
His works have been with me since childhood, but possibly it was when
Mother read The Hobbit to me and many other children when I was seven or
eight.
> Which of J.R.R. Tolkien's books have you read and which is your

Most of them, I don't really have a favourite. Which wing is the
favourite for the pilot who wants to fly his airplane, the right or the left
one?
> Which is your favorite character from "The Hobbit"? "The Lord of the
> Rings"? "The Silmarillion"?:
Nor do I really have a favourite character.
> Where would you live if you could dwell anywhere in Middle-earth?:
At this season of the year in this country the answer to that is clear
and swift as the river Nimrodel: Ithilien, on the banks of Anduin, near or
at the Ethir - after the war, of course. No good taking a swim in the warm
lovely surf with orc arrows and Haradrim blades everywhere, eager to test
the softness of my hide. In autumn: Rhovanion, following Bilbo's path. For
some reason The Hobbit has a strong feel of woodland autumn to me, and vice
versa.
Any other season: someplace in Eriador, perhaps Bree. Not in Imladris,
though perhaps near it. I would love to visit Lórien, but would possibly
find it irksome to dwell there for years, like having my favourite food five
times a day every day until I didn't only tire of it but also became fatter
than Bombur. As the only Man in Lórien I would at least feel lonely and out
of place, like a sparrow in a crane dance. With a whole crowd of Men, I
would fear to contaminate the land with our presence.
> Which lord would you serve if you lived in Middle-earth? (You can
> choose any of the lords from any of the first three ages.):
I should prefer to serve and be served by none. But if I lived during
the last part of the War of the Ring, and were heroic enough, perhaps
Denethor, as a common soldier of the Tower like Beregond - before Denethor
went mad.
> Have you ever tried to learn to speak or write any of the languages
> that Tolkien invented?:
No, save for a few translations into Elvish here and there, such as when
I translated the name Harry Potter into Quenya ("Pandatur Cemnaro") some
time back.
> Has Tolkien inspired you to write any stories of your own?:
Not to my knowledge - save indirectly (Ajacai).
> Has Tolkien had any impact on the moral choices of your life? (In
> other words, did you recall specific quotes from his works when you
> were trying to figure out what was the right thing to do?):
No. At most he has given better voice to some of my existing sentiments
than I, and on other issues I disagree with him. The prime example of the
former is where Gandalf in effect discusses the death penalty with Frodo,
about Gollum deserving death.
> Would you recommend the works of Tolkien to your friends?:
If they asked, yes. Last I did was when recommending my teenage cousin
to read lots of English, such as Tolkien, if he wanted to become good at
writing it.
> Do you have a favorite Tolkien-related website?:
I check Ardalambion sometimes.
> What is your favorite Tolkien-related reference book?:
Tolkien's own books.
> What other authors has Tolkien inspired you to read?:
None.
> What other authors do you currently enjoy reading?:
Well, there are Pterry, Le Guin, a few science fiction writers - those
who try to keep their subcreated universe as believable to a physics major
as possible. Other than fiction, fx. Jared Diamond. Various unnamed
historians and palaeontologists on Wikipedia.
> Did you enjoy any of the movies about Middle-earth?:
Yes, as partially Tolkien-inspired swords-and-sandals movies, with a
couple of nice hoochies in them.

Neither. But I am friend to some of the TEUNCistas.

My mother worked at a library at the time and brought books home that
were no longer fit to be in the collection (Dutch "written down").
That's how I found the Hobbit when I was a child. I then realised that
"In de ban van de Ring", that had been in my parent's bookcase all my

Faramir? Or Galadriel. But that doesn't go too well with the living in

No.

I fear it's the other way around; when it says "the new Tolkien!" on

There was a period when it was rather unreliable, but that seems to
have disappeared. I haven't had any problems accessing the site for
months now, so I've put all such plans on hold. I still maintain a

It's a good thing about the word 'true' that it has so many meanings
that any connection with actual, and factual, 'Truth' is allowed to
be entirely co-incidental.
I was once a member of that worthy organisation -- back while the
Softrat's piercing wit could be enjoyed there also. Alas I didn't
have time to post anything (though I managed to read the majority),
and so had to leave again. But I do not think that AFT is yet ready
for a Wise Sage who has never been privy to the wit of TEUNC.

You could always try to persuade Faramir to launch a coup, deposing the
usurper Strider Longshanks who falsely claims the title of King - Long

It'd make things interesting.

I fondly remember a post that was intended to settle the Thrain issue
once and for all. The poster in question set out the entire history
of the Thrains in /The Hobbit/ very carefully and logically (and
actually extremely well), allowing the reader to come to a conclusion
before presenting his own -- which strangely was the opposite of that
the reader would inevitably come to.

I seem to remember that Michelle got herself into a few of the films

recall them, it was several people supporting one side, a few more on
the other side and the few people trying to investigate the middle
ground quickly being shouted down from both sides . . .
My recollection, although probably not terribly reliable on this
point, is that she argued that Jackson might not be quite that spawn

Almost boring, eh?
Truth be told, I do prefer a debate in which one feels capable of
moving and even conceding a few points without being treated as
either a black betrayer (betrayer! Hah! Maeglin was nothin' compared
to those Jackson apologetics!) or a 'l00ser n00b!'

Ah, well, I will once I get it off my old hard drive - I had a bit of a
computer crisis before Christmas, with my desk-top breaking, and then
windows going screwy on my laptop so I needed to reset it, losing
everything. I don't see the point in fixing my desk-top (it's quite
venerable now, and anyway I don't use it), so I've ordered a hard-drive

Got it, but not had anything more than a flick through it. I'm looking
forward to getting hold of the John Ratecliffe's Hobbit books, but I'm
waiting for them and the Hammond and Scull book to come out in paperback.
Out of interest, has anyone bought the other Hammond and Scull book, the
'Tolkien Companion and Guide chronology'? I saw it at the same time as
the Guide, and had a flick through that too, but as far as I could tell
it was simply a day-by-day guide to Tolkien's life, which seemed
obsessive even for me! Is there any actual value in it for studying
Middle-earth?

mhm. In my defense, I think I usually only got that snappish in
response to other people getting somewhat snappish. In the defense of
the regulars at the time, I think I landed here at the same time as the
wave of nothing-but-movie fanatics, and therefore got 'labeled' and was
working under a negative cloud.

I think irritation over the movies was running pretty high, especially
with the influx of movie fans. I was attempting to find a middle ground
in some point-to-point comparison analysis and spinning my wheels in the
mud of "apologist" dismissiveness. Not that I particularly have any
urge to start all that up again, but so many years away from it, we'd
probably have a tamer discussion, with less shouting.
Also, a whole parenting thing got dragged into it out of left field, and
that's never a good place to go.

I'm sure I don't rank among the who's who of these hallowed halls, but
I'll fill this out anyway, just for fun.

Hmmm, I don't know.
> What are your hobbies and/or interests?:
Reading, gaming, and choklit.
> What do you dislike?:
Olives, newsgroup flamers, and people at the grocery store who leave
their carts just strewn about in the middle of the parking lot instead
of putting them in the cart return area.
> How did you discover the works of J.R.R. Tolkien?:
My parents gave them to me back before I can remember.
> Which of J.R.R. Tolkien's books have you read and which is your

All the main ones, only a smattering of HoME, and I keep planning to get
a copy of Father Christmas Letters.
> Which is your favorite character from "The Hobbit"?
Bilbo.
> "The Lord of the Rings"?
Gollum.
"The Silmarillion"?:
Turin, even though he is kind of a jerk.
> Where would you live if you could dwell anywhere in Middle-earth?:
The Shire.
> Which lord would you serve if you lived in Middle-earth? (You can
> choose any of the lords from any of the first three ages.):
I'd live in the Shire, so I wouldn't serve any lord. Ideally I would be
landed gentry and people would serve me.
> Have you ever tried to learn to speak or write any of the languages
> that Tolkien invented?:
The most basic stuff, and that by osmosis not formal study.
> Has Tolkien inspired you to write any stories of your own?:
Yes, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
> Has Tolkien had any impact on the moral choices of your life? (In
> other words, did you recall specific quotes from his works when you
> were trying to figure out what was the right thing to do?):
Maybe. He has undoubtedly influenced my life outlook, but it is hard to
untangle all the threads of influence, and I do not think any particular
passages in particular have informed any of my choices.
> Would you recommend the works of Tolkien to your friends?:
Who would be friends with someone who hasn't read Tolkien!?
> Do you have a favorite Tolkien-related website?:
I have a bunch of them bookmarked, but no.
> What is your favorite Tolkien-related reference book?:
Fonstad's Atlas.
> What other authors has Tolkien inspired you to read?:
Eddison. No others by direct suggestion, although he has profoundly
affected my aesthetic judgment. I have certainly read other books to
try to recapture some of the magic and sense of wonder. I would have
read Lewis because of Tolkien, except that I had already read some of
Lewis before I knew that they were friends.
> What other authors do you currently enjoy reading?:
Ursula Le Guin, Neil Gaiman, Jack Vance, Peter Beagle, J. K. Rowling,
Garrison Keillor, and Chaim Potok (changing up the genres a bit at the end).
> Did you enjoy any of the movies about Middle-earth?:
I thoroughly enjoyed Peter Jackson's movies. They are great even though
so much of them makes me cringe. I can overlook the bad bits because
the good bits are so good. In my humble opinion, of course.
> Bonus question: Are you friend or foe of TEUNC, the Dark Lord of

I used to hang out with that crowd, a long long time ago, although I've
never bowed down before the Alter of Tyope. Nice folks though.
