Well, in the Shire they are mainly about Hobbit genealogies, which all
but hobbits find exceedingly dull. When it comes to Rivendell some of the
original authors are still around, to clarify questions you may have, and to
translate from the archaic language the old works are written in.

I'm sure Gondor's collection is much smaller, and much less
well-maintained and well-indexed, than Rivendell's. And I'd expect the
Shire's collection to reflect the cultural and ideological blind spots
of Hobbits.

I did manage to read all seven Narnia books, in Danish translation, when
I was a kid, even though the heavy-handed Christian allegory really
bothered me.

I'm referring to the other Inklings. AFAIK I used the New Grolier CD-ROM
Encyclopedia (this was way before Google) to try to find out smoething
about the other Inklings, and I probably quickly got the impression that
they weren't (prose) fantasy authors, or even science fiction authors,
and so I stopped bothering about them.

I can't support that, then. I'm a long-standing member of a Danish
society devoted to correct language use. Neither my Danish nor my
English is flawless, but I work to improve it every now and then.

No, it's worse. There's no contest. I don't represent the consensus of
the Le Guin fan community, but from what I have read it is very rare to
find someone who liked the books and found any redeeming qualities in
the miniseries. There are a significant number of Tolkien fans that
also like PJ's movies (despite their many faults).

BTW, what's important here is only that the vowel is long; Tolkien
himself changed his opinion what diacritical mark to use for that from
time to time. If also seen people write double-u in pure ASCII, i.e.
Huurin.

And the trema here, OTOH, isn't really important; that's just to
tell English readers that they should pronounce it Fe-anor instead
of using a vowel as in English "fear". Most non-English readers are
not tempted to do that in the first place

To somebody of Tolkien's educational level and period, that trema (diaresis)
would probably just be natural (though maybe not - Fowler's says it's more
common in America - but I was taught to use them). It's used with any
double-vowel, where the vowels are in separate syllables: cooperate, naive,
etc. But it's "coöperate" and "naïve", so I'd have thought it should
be "Feänor" (and your example of "fear" doesn't work in London, and
probably other places, where it's definitely pronounced "fee-yuh" )

Never having read the book, I didn't get the meaning and mistook it as
"everyone who has read LotR has also actually read the Sword" -- and
since I haven't read the latter, I answered "No"
