Kat, if you zoom in, it appears that you live about 100 feet offshore?

Wow, that would have been a little too much adventure for one trip!

LOL Fixed it. I was obviously zoomed out too far when I placed it. We're
a bare 1025 from the shore, but we are on dry land. Well, soggy land
right now. *G*

I also added you to the map.

The silver lining, less chance of water rationing this summer.

Oh, yes. No one (with sense) in California or Nevada is regretting the
rain. Just wishing it had been spread out at less intensity over a longer
time period. :>

As long as the distance between you and the ocean is a positive number that
should be OK. Of course, given that we're talking about California's
coastline, perhaps another condition should be that the number is a
constant... <grin>

I'm all too familiar with small numbers describing the distance to water:
the family house where my sister lives in New Orleans (we both own it, but
only she lives there) wasn't flooded...but it was only a block and a half
from the edge of the floodwaters.

I'm also quite familiar with the consequences of a storm; when Hurricane
Betsy went through New Orleans I was standing transmitter watch by myself at
the last television transmitter in the city (WYES-TV)...and finally
abandoned it when water started coming through the cinderblock walls. One
odd experience from that: after the worst of the storm passed I walked from
our transmitter site (in downtown New Orleans) to the studios of the NBC
station (WDSU, in the middle of the French Quarter) -- and the entire
Quarter was dark. There aren't too many people who can say that they walked
through the Quarter and were the only person on Royal Street, and not a
single light was burning...

Anyway, it seems that everyone has survived the latest Pacific storm with no
major crises (so far)...let's keep it that way.

Well, if you were to stick a pin in Lansing, Michigan that's where Laurie

I know exactly how far we are to the water because the insurance company
wanted to know. 25 ft closer, and we'd be paying more, even as renters.

I happen to live in a town that was originally founded because they were
building an excursion train from San Francisco down along the coast to
Santa Cruz. The train was built ON the San Andreas Fault, and promptly
fell into the ocean during the San Francisco earthquake before
completion. Your statement was truth! *GGG*

In fact, about 2 miles South of us, they are building a tunnel to
reroute a section of 1 that has become increasingly unstable.

A pin in Minneapolis is close enough for me (New Hope is a inner ring
suburb of said city).

Do you have a slow cooker? That's what I used. Roughly, take Granny Smith
apples (enough to pack bottom of slow cooker pot), core. (Coring an apple,
btw, is a pain.) Peel the skin off the top third, so it will absorb
flavor. But the apple will need the rest of the skin to hold itself
together. Squirt a bit of lemon juice over the exposed parts, to reduce
browning, if you want. Sprinkle all the apples with about a quarter cup
brown sugar, a teaspoon cinnamon, and dab with a couple tablespoons butter.
Cook on low for 3-4 hours, until apples soft.

Charmingly simple recipe. And not toooooooo unhealthy.

Whoops. Recipe courtesy 'Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker' by

If you want to add me to the list, try Oakton, VA. ICBM coordinates:
