I thought Nolte made a pretty good Cody. Have you ever seen the short
film "Life Lessons" in the New York Stories collection? Not exactly
Beat, but damned close.

Forgotten until now. He was the painter? I only recall Woody's mother in the

Horrendous. It took Carolyn Cassady's Heart Beat, which was simply letters
in her possession between the icons interspersed with her commentary, and
applied standard issue Hollywood staples to it. The rows of Eisenhower
housing units, the watering of the lawns, the wild rebellious Ménage a trois
in the stifling insufferable outraged setting. Neal is jealous of Kerouac.
Neal wants to run away from his family burden (he did, actually, plenty of
times, and without the agony in the film at the mere suggestion from a
comely blonde in a convertible). Neal is bored with his middleclass
trainman's gig. They are all miserable unto death.

It's bunkum entire. Ferlinghetti's comment while it was filming: "They use
this slight piece of a book to gain access to all of our lives." Ginsberg
threatened to sue if they used his name. They didn't, but used his
character and events.

Only Carolyn Cassady cooperated. She was allowed on the set. She spoke
with Sissy herself! They paid her seventy thousand. Would you have turned
it down?

It was from first to last claptrap pap.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

That's pretty much what my roomie thought too, what you say, and he knew the
literature, the pre-shooting gossip, well-informed guy, the Louisville drama
thing festival, a few of his plays performed in Chicago & LA, at least one
screenplay optioned, lotsa script doctoring, and maybe right. On the other
hand, not a bad flick at the time. Now--only now--I remember feeding a TWIX
roll into my typewriter like I saw in the movie, and some fire came out. I'd
never read the Beats except in passing.

The portrayal of Ginsberg, who also refused to be involved, was pretty
insulting, as I recall.

Carolyn writes of her displeasure with the movie in "Heart Beef" (Moody
Street Irregulars 9, 1981) which also includes a photo of Carolyn with
Spacek, Nolte and Heard.

Who knows if they are in print, but "Holy Goof" was about Neil Cassady.
Nothing else comes to mind specifically about him, though I might
be overlooking something.

"The First Third" is autobiographical, and was published after Neal's
death. I think I have a copy of that, but I sure don't know where I put
it.

"As Ever" is a collection of letters between Neil Cassady and Allen
Ginsberg, edited by Barry Gifford, and which came out in 1977.

He must show up in "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" in his role
as the Prankster's bus driver.

There was an article in Golden Road years ago about Neil, and it was
reprinted in "Goin' Down the Road" by Blair Jackson. It's basically
a collection of articles from the magazine, which was about the Grateful
Dead, and the article appeared because of the overlap. I suspect there
must be references to Neal in other books about the Dead, but I'm too
lazy to check.

The Shadowville State University has a copy of this, never seen one
anywhere else. Worth looking for though, for sure.

I noticed an expanded version of "The First Third" in a Beat bookshop
in Atlanta a year or so ago, from City Lights, but didn't buy it---
maybe next time. I noticed a pretty good chunk of extra writing was
included that wasn't in the copy I have from the 1970s, though. Good
stuff if you're interested in Cassidy, but not particularly for the
general reader, of course.

The Neal Cassady biography, "The Holy Goof", was republished earlier this
month, by Thunder's Mouth Press, NYC.

Dave

I'm on that! Always wanted a copy to carry around.

###Could be why they were asking so much money for the copy I gazed
at! It hasn't been reprinted since 1981?
