Well, here's a suggestion.
The young adult group (kinda unofficially official) of our church
is having a "Game Show Night" tomorrow night (1/27/2007) at our
church. Essentially, different members of the 19-35 age group
are putting on their own versions of popular game shows.
If you want to see me wearing a bald wig, bumping knuckles with
contestants and saying, "Amethyst, open the case" then come on
out to see my own version of "Deal or No Deal".
There is an admission fee... bring a snack food.

Actually, Messiah college, where I went, had a blue ribbon chef
on the staff. We had AWESOME food there.

Further comment - I asked Athena (who has seen both versions and read
both books) which version of Wonka was better. She agrees - without
question it was Gene Wilder.

I had the most horrendous crush on Gene Wilder after seeing Willy
Wonka. I still love the music and the movie. The song "Pure
Imagination" is a classic, if such an unknown work can be a classic.

The Burton/Depp one was darker and much closer to the tone of the
original book (if not the details).
However, my vote goes with Tim/Johnny ... because of the way Gene
behaved when the sequel came out. I am that disappointed.

Evidently I missed some gossip... brief summary of how he behaved?
I still haven't seen the newer film (I'm going to, honest!), but
the only gossip I heard about it was endless, dreary speculations
about whether or no Mr Depp based his characterization on Michael
Jackson. (I deeply did not care. Hello? Movie? Fiction?)

It depends on how you define "better".
The more entertaining, and family-friendly, portrayal was Gene Wilder.
But to me, Johnny Depp did a more accurate version, closer to what I
envisioned from the book.

Personally, I like the plastered grin he wore most of the way
through the movie. Definitely the look of someone uncomfortable
among "normal" society.

Agreed on all counts.
Of course, from a techno-geek perspective, I obviously enjoyed
the SFX in the Burton/Depp version. Gotta love the infinitely
cloned Oompa-Loompas.
