I don't know about slower- I had a pretty efficient flame going
immediately. Once the charcoal is lit, you're supposed to let it burn
anyway- not do what the neighbors do and dump more lighter fluid on. Wink

Of course, we have a small (14") grill, so all the charcoal I need fits
into the chimney, I don't need to use the lit stuff to then light more.
The one I have, though, would fit in more charcoal than I need.

I'd seen Alton Brown use one, but not having any other experience with
them, I was very happy with how easy and well it worked, without needing
to add chemical-flavors to my food or my hair. I was, instead,
wood-smoke scented, but that's not so bad. Smile

Yes, I had thought of that problem, and will probably end up with both,
honestly. For now, though, since it's just us, we can eat at 10 PM (and
sometimes do, regardless of what kind of grill we had) without starving
children. *G* I forget to put chicken on enough ahead of time often
enough that extra 10 minutes for the charcoal to get going (20 total, vs
10 for the gas one to heat up) isn't that much of a difference. :-/ But
we still have a small propane cylinder from a tabletop one we used to
have, so we intend to get another one for when we don't want to wait.

I'd also considered the marshmallow thing. Wink My parents used to let us
toast marshmallows over the charcoal when I was a kid. Of course,
being a grown up, we sometimes already toast them in the fireplace
during the winter- which neither of our parents let us do. LOL

Just thought of another way to use up apricots - DRY them! My Dad did
this one year when we had an over-abundance of plums, just washed, cut
in half and pitted them, then placed them on a baking sheet in a sunny
area covered with a light gauze cloth to keep the insects off. IIRC
it took about a week but they kept for months.

Or you could use a food dehydrator (but what's the fun in that) for a
more quality-controlled fashion.

How about as Leather? An easy to follow recipe is at

http://www.recipesource.com/munchies/snacks/00/rec0096.html It will
keep a long time in refrigerator or freezer and has lots of uses.

I adore dried apricots. The bugs in my area are sneaky and
creepy -- cloth alone would not reassure me. Maybe I should
get a dehydrator. Pity, since sunshine I can supply in
abundance.

Ooooo!

I just bought a blender yesterday. So, prior to yesterday,
I couldn't have made that. But I eat dried fruit in the
office all the time, and I do now have a blender, so I'll
give it a try. Thanks for the tip!

Well, at least you are not called "The Apricot Lady" (YET).

It definitely sounds like 'zucchini syndrome', but with apricots.

Or, soak the charcoal in liquid oxygen - lighting time is in seconds!!

The video link takes you to Purdue's home page; I did not do a further
search for the video.

Is charcoal lighter fluid banned in California yet? I know when we left
CA in 1987 there was definite talk of doing so - too many volatile
organic carbons. I always figured folks would just try to use less safe
alternatives such as gasoline, kerosene, etc.

Could be that the chimney thing design has gotten just that
hair better since I was a kiddie.

Wood-smoke scented isn't bad at all.

Zucchini grow well?

I don't eat them, given a choice, so it is unlikely I'll
plant them.

As it is, in another few weeks (month?) I'm going to morph
into the Fig Lady. My fig tree is thriving, too.

Gosh, I'm glad the olive trees I planted last winter are
non-fruiting varieties.

You are aware that my husband got his engineering degree at Purdue,
right? Wink *GGG* Trust me, I've seen it before. But actually, the first
I heard of it was from an old Dave Barry column.

They are just a tad nuts there.

The website above does give Dave Barry his due credit, and that is where
I first saw it too.

H'mmm...did he take any Computer Science classes at Purdue from Buster
Dunsmore (aka "Dr. Hubert Dunsmore")? Buster and I were in grad school
together in the early 1970s while both of us were working at the UT Computer
Center; he was the manager of the help desk and I was the chief sysprog.

IIRC, California banned charcoal BBQ's not just the starter fluid.

Obviously, CA hasn't banned charcoal or lighter fluid, unless Edna and I
(and my neighbors) are outlaws.

In fact, San Jose, apparently (according to my lease) has banned gas
grills from apartment buildings. It's not enforced, but technically
only charcoal is allowed. I'd much rather it was the opposite, if they
have to ban one of them.

Maybe CA will just ban cooking of food?
