Hey guys,

I've been toying around for a while with keeping track of my ancestors, but
I don't know where to start. I've got my dad's family bible that goes back
one or two generations. Can anyone suggest a software package I might be
able to buy?

I heard Family Tree is pretty good.

Thx,
M@

Family Tree Maker is good, Matt, but, it (as far as I know) has
problems updating if you're behind a firewall. What you want always
seems to be on the next CD (which costs), but -

there are a LOT of geneologies posted on the web via Family Tree
Maker, and (which is how I got as far as I did on my tree) quite often
has information you're looking for, once you've established the
connection between you and that tree. (It's a heck of a lot cheaper
than buying more and more CD's).

Drawback - I believe it's in a proprietary format, and doesn;t always
play nice-nice with some of the other tree makers (I forget the
"standard" format) that use a more standard wya of storing and sharing
data.

Matt,
I have used Family Tree Maker, although it is for a fictious family, and like
it. I do not have enough information even about my grandparents to get
anywhere with tracing my own family!

Well, my Aunt has tracked my family back to 1740 - prior to that the Craft's
were 'cross the pond so getting beyond that will be pretty tough --- however, a
friend of mine has had a *LOT* of success just looking up record in the local
library. Sure - it's kind of tech-deficient, but probably a good starting
place.

my problem, ron, is that i do not even have the names of my grandparents.
Well, I do not know one grandfather's name at all, don't know the maiden name
of one grandmother, who is from Italy anyway, don't know when the Italian
grandfather arrived in the US although I can find him in the 1930 census.
I can find my father in the 1930 census and his brother but not his mother, i
believe they were living apart and do not know where she was living although i
thought NY.
Real tough to even get started. Only document I have is my dad's dd214
don't know when or where my parents were married. Stuff like that.
Makes for a difficult research project.

Chasing family trees can be fun and exasperating at th same time.
Part of my mom's side has been here (US) since at least mid 1600's and
have chased that line back to then and at least back to England. My
dad's side all came in mid-1800's. Have been forturnate that the New
Orleans city library has a very good genealogy section so can trace
the lines pretty much until they cross the pond. My irish side is
frustrating- records exist that I would love to at least check out and
probably would be very helpful but they aren't available on line or
through a family history library- or at least not around here. And
unfortunately Ed McMahon hasn't shown up on my doorstep to make me
independently wealthy so I can't work through the research center in
Ireland at the rates they charge.

Chasing mysteries can be very frustrating but eventually something
comes to light and you break through and it feels great.

I use PAF to hold data files. It is downloadable from the LDS site for
free and since they have gone to a windows based program, it works
pretty good and the data files don't take up as much space as Family
Tree Maker. Tried FTM but at the time space was critical on the
machine I had so I shifted to PAF.

I had a go at tracing my maternal grandfather's family, but I got to a stage
where I could only continue by going up to Manchester in person to consult
the files. My grandad always claimed that one of his ancestors was a rabbi,
and I'd love to confirm that. Maybe one day!

Ok, something that I think I'm well qualified to discuss.

I have used several programs, but found that the easiest, and best is
called Rootsmagic. Quite logically, you can find this program at
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.rootsmagic.com" target="_blank">http://www.rootsmagic.com</a> I'm in no way connected with this program.
It is $30 to buy and WELL worth it.

I used Family Tree Maker, but found that RM was far, far better. I
have 1856 people on my tree (including my side and my wife's side).
Anyway, one of the nice things about RM, compared to FTM, is that you
can see up to 5 generations on one screen. Doesn't sound like a big
deal, but it is. RM can print nice charts, reports, pics, etc.

You can probably logon from home to your local library's website and
access HeritageQuest. They have all the census reports online. I
believe that it is different from Ancestry's in that the index was
compiled separately. So the results are somewhat dependant on
interpreting the handwriting of the census taker. Note, the most
recent census available to the public is 1930. HeritageQuest should be
free from the comfort of your home.

The census is a great starting point because it tells you about the
citizenship of the person. If they were born overseas, you should be
able to determine from the census where they were born, when they came
to USA, and when they became a citizen. You can then go back to find
their naturalization paperwork.

I could go on and on. If you have any questions, feel free to reply
directly to me @ familytreemashug.DeleteThis@fuspammingaholes.comcast.net (you
know what to remove!)

Lawrence

PS - my tree is published online w/ Java @

I use Family Tree Maker. I find it very easy to input information into, and
you can produce output in a number of different ways. The format on my
website being one of them (just click on My Genealogy and then choose a
family name from the drop down).

Most companies will provide you with a cut down version that allows you to
key in up to 100 names just so that you can try them out and see which one
you prefer. Have a look at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.genealogysupplies.com/" target="_blank">http://www.genealogysupplies.com/</a> for some of the
software that's around.

I'm not quite sure what the problems are updating behind a firewall, or
actually what the comment means (sorry Wes I must have my stupid head on
today).

I went to <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.genealogy.com" target="_blank">www.genealogy.com</a> and then to the community section and finally to
the message boards. I went to my mother's maiden name and posted a message
with the information I had on her earliest ancestor and I got lucky.
Someone had already done all the research and gave me her information. All
I had to do was enter it into my family tree program. That took a long time
since there were over 400 names to enter. The LDS Website can be helpful
too.

Talk about luck! Actually a friend suggested putting in my last known
ancestor into google and BAM, I found a guy in Michigan who had done a lot
of research already. He said it was shaky down this one line - he had ME in
his chart!!! Problem is, I was born in 1933 and died in 1981 Smile Go
figure:) So I am going to take his research and try to connect it to mine.
his stuff was at genealogy.com as well.

It's only a problem because I have no transport of my own and no-one to stay
with in Manchester at the moment - oh, and some of the records I need are
Jewish. At least, my grandad always maintained that one of his ancestors
was a rabbi, even though his surname was Scottish!
