footage on statuary at the cathedral of Notre Dame reminded me of a
book illustration, and I'm hoping to find and reread it.
the central character was a girl - a batch of statues of women at a
medieval church were/came alive and caused problems for the community.
I believe there was some curse or another and that at least some of
them were originally foolish or possibly only mildly evil. a large dog
(Kerry Blue Terrier) featured but I can't recall if it belonged to the
girl, or happened along magically to assist her.
I remember some sort of venturing to assist the stone maidens - or
possibly to prevent them from causing harm. she either lived on or
travelled on a boat; I think I remember a barge. it's possible it was
set in Britain or Germany.
it would likely have been published by the 60s or very early 70s at the
latest - I *think* it might have been slightly older than that, though.
Anyone familiar with (older) YA novels who might help me track down
title or author? or can anyone suggest some way in which I might search
effectively for it? >> Stay informed about: new to group, with book search request |

Could this be Margaret Gibbs' "Once In A Blue Moon"?
A group of gargoyles and a statue (Oxford, England) come alive
"once in a blue moon" and take a trip on a boat/barge. They have
to race back to their spouts. The dog could be a gargoyle.

Margaret Benary Isberts (sp?) _The Wicked Enchantment_. Girl, check.
Kerry Blue terrier, check. Statue come alive & causing problems,
check. The statue was of one of the foolish virgins from the parable
of the Wise & Foolish Virgins.
No boat, though, that I remember.

I think it might be _The Wicked Enchantment_ by Margot Benary-Isbert. I
don't remember the barge, but there was a dog, and statues coming to life
and something about gargoyles, I think.
