I almost had the same problem with the new laptop from Dell I bought for
my daughter so she could play LOTRO with us.

Ordered it cheap(ish) at Dell Outlet. Nice Vostro, not a big 17 incher
like mine, but a decent little machine.

Get the internet working (yea!) with the wireless connection.

Download Mozilla.

Spend 2 days downloading the LOTRO software.

Go to open her account. <bonk> Won't load.

Tried again. Same result.

Called my friend the techie who got me into LOTRO.

Sent a file to tech support for LOTRO, who, wonderful
people, told me exactly where the problem was and suggested
a fix.

I actually had to roll back a driver to get the graphics
accelerator to work, but it did, and now I'm happy.

And we haven't had a chance to go play, since.

I know the feeling. One of the fringe benefits of my job is that I get a
chance to play with lots of new machines from major manufacturers, not all
of which have been announced to the public.

Reading that posting my first impression was that you were saying that he
had a bad case of Microsoft.

Reparsing the sentence showed what I think you were meaning to say. MS
ain't nice; hopefully your game partner isn't too far into it. Good luck to
him!

<ponder, ponder, ponder> Oh. Yes. The other interpretation makes more

He has bad days, but generally the symptoms are mild from what he
allows me to know about it (headaches and such).

LOTRO is the only game out there i'm tempted to try. I'd love to mess
about in Middle Earth, being a serious Tolkien geek, not to mention
the screen shots i've seen of it are gorgeous.

Could a couple players be successful in it? My partner and I mostly
play as a twosome - it's hard to find more that are willing to put up
with our quirks <g> although we occasionally hook up with DH. WoW is
solo and duo friendly for the most part, but the "fellowship" concept
of LOTRO worries me if the group has to be 9.

At the lower levels, duo's work fine. Solos can even play, if you
choose the right class. Fellowships-- I got my kids involved so I
had people to fellow with, but I also run one character solo and
join fellowships ad hoc. Some days it works better than others, but
my character is progressing.

I could send you a free trial. And you could join our kinship! And
you could play with us on Saturdays. And you could give me your
character name so I could "friend" you and know when you're online.
And...

Oh. Sorry. I want more people to play with that aren't level 50.
Let me know if you're interested in the trial.

I'm glad to hear it's not too bad, at least. (But still worse than a

I might ... depends on whether my game partner's interested. We have
upwards of 2 dozen characters/alts running currently and WoW keeps
expanding every time you turn around. With new stuff to do all the
time, I don't know how i'd fit LOTRO in. Well at the moment anyway

I will probably replacing my old Vaio this year. I got it in 1999, runs
Win98 1st edition, and I quit using a few years ago because of the 'Vaio
shutdown problem'. For the price to get that fixed I can by a very cheap
laptop that runs rings around it (win98, PII 333 MHz, 6 GB HD). There is
a work-around that lets it run, and it still plays DVDs just fine, so I
keep it around for camping entertainment.

I am starting my research for my new one. The overtime this weekend
alone (12 hours today and 12 hours tomorrow) would buy a nice one, but I
am saving for a month long trip this summer. And if I wait to buy it in
Oregon it will be 6% less - no sales tax.

There are some very interesting new developments in MS research. I'm
hoping for a cure soon.

Unfortunately, any cure is probably too late for my friend Stuart. His
MS is an unusual variant that has eaten huge holes in his brain -
physically he has lost more than half of his brain matter. He had
earned a PhD in mathematics, now he sits and drools in a nursing home,
unable to carry on a 2 minute conversation. It has been heartbreaking
seeing such a young man (he's my age, 44) go downhill so rapidly.

Jesse was diagnosed with MS, officially, 4 years ago. He goes in on
March 6th for the annual MRI to track the damage.

Every time I hear a story like this, I have to remind myself of all the
people I know, personally, whose battle with MS hasn't been so dramatic.
My favorite English Teacher is still active and travels all over the
world. Jesse's aunt is a successful pediatrician. A friend of the family
is a nurse, who although not wheelchair bound, is vibrant, travels,
and takes care of her grandchildren. My cousin, who rides her Harley and
lives her life to the fullest.

Otherwise, I'd be hiding in a closet about now.
