OK, so they're taking the beef out of beef extract, and replacing it with
yeast. To appeal to vegetarians. Who already have the established
brands Marmite and Vegemite which they will now be in direct competition
with instead of having the major brand name.
Are you sure this was merely some management types, and not actual
politicians?

In other words, they will have products against which they can compete
directly rather than having to be inventive in finding customers.

They can't very well go on calling it Bovril then, seeing that means
"Life-giving from bovines". I do hope that someone in the EU regulatory
business is watching them.
>I am livid! I use bovril in every savoury dish that I make and

Um. Maybe you could use Oxo or Knorr in the savoury dishes? I don't think
it would be possible to substitute crushed oxo on toast or in sandwiches
though...
>Apparantly they want to make it more appealing to vegetarians

I don't suppose it will be at *all* the same in coffee or porridge when
it's made from yeast instead of beef. What a damn' shame.
>*cries*
Oh, poor BB! Here, have a hankie with a lovingly hand-embroidered cow in
one corner, and a wreath of clover round the edge, to mop up with...
Question: what's the shelf-life of Bovril? I mean, how long would it
generally last if it is left unopened? I shall obviously have to lay in a
really huge supply for the shop, to last a long while. (And maybe you can
buy up great stocks of it for use at home, to ward off the evil day when it
is no longer there for the 'widges?)

And they will lose, because the Marmite folk are calmly and utterly Marmite
folk in a most traditional way, and even at one point prevented the Marmite
makers from changing the shape of the jar, by a determined boycott of the
new straight jars -- it halved the sales for four months, and the makers
admitted defeat and went back to the proper jars again.

Does Unilever also make Oxo or Knorr, by any chance? If not, they will
lose out to those, too.

Unilever owns van den Bergh, which makes Oxo. Knorr appears to be a
brand of Bestfoods UK Ltd.

Bestfoods is also part of Unilever -- its full name is 'Unilever Bestfoods
UK Ltd'.

Aha. Thank you. All becomes clear; they had "too many" products in that
particular slot.

That doesn't surprise me -- they seem to own just about everything!
Unilever come round the university every so often to seduce undergraduates
into their graduate training programs; they have these big events where
they give out lots of free Unilever stuff. PG Tips, Lipton Tea, Knorr,
Marmite, Bovril, Pepperami, Pot Noodles, cosmetics, perfumes, aftershave,
cleaning products, ice cream...
Cheers,
N.

Ah, if they own Oxo they also own Brooke Bond, since the industrial
arm of that conglomerate (culture medium, etc.) was "Brooke Bond Oxoid".

<FX: Moose looks in cupboard>
They _do_ appear to own Marmite, though. This is worrying.

Unnerving even. I thought Marmite belonged to Boots: are they now
Unilever, or have they always been and I just didn't notice?

Marmite _used_ to be "Premier Brands", at one point (I assume they
got bought up at some time or other). I've had "Marmite" that was
made in Sarf Efrica and imported into .uk, and it tasted more like
Vegemite. (This was an /interesting/ surprise.)
Off the topic in hand, and vaguely Ork-related: I used to have to
visit the company "Disaster Recovery" site in Walton (upon the Thames),
and that used to be Brooke Bond's computer centre (apparently). It's
the only machine room I've ever seen with wood-panelled walls and
brown cork tiles....
Chris.
