Post subject: help me find this book!
Archived from groups: alt>books>reviews (more info?)

Many years ago I read a single book (possible series) set in a futuristic
possibility for Earth:

Families are allowed two children, although some are allowed to produce a
"third".
The lead character in the story is a "third" who is taken from his family
around age 8/10 to a camp/school type setting, almost like military school.
In this school there are teams (a.k.a: harry potter first movie), which get
bonus points for performance in the competition capture the flag, to win the
game it would require four players from one team or the other to touch their
helmets to the four corners of the gateway.

In his first game, he is instructed by the team leader to "hide" in the
gateway of his team since he is so small compared to all others on the
field, during the game all of his teammates are "captured/immobilized", with
only 4 of the opposing team remaining.
Since he had the ability to take out one of the opposing team player before
he is immobilized, his team was awarded a tie-game instead of a loss.

Shortly after this game his instructors give him his own squad to lead ,
very soon all teams have been defeated by his squad.

As our hero grows older, the instructors introduce him to a new version of
training: a simulator game.
This simulation starts with overwhelming odds in his favor, and slowly gets
more difficult until he is facing opposing forces two and three times
greater than his.
The final battle in this simulation pits his force against the alien
homeworld, to win the game he must get all his forces to aim their weapons
at the planet to destroy the enemy homeworld.

any ideas what the author / title(s) may be?

J

Enders game by Orson Scott Card. If you find the the version with the
prologue by the author, do not read the prologue, its heavily up its own
ass. The story is a good one though.
