I have a 1923 signed, limited edition (244/377) copy of THE ENCHANTED APRIL
by
the author of ELIZABETH AND HER GERMAN GARDEN, published by Doubleday, Page
and Co. To determine its value I've looked on ebay, amazon and alibris. No
listings for this limited edition with autograph. Any suggestions for a
source to determine value? Thanks

In most cases, it helps to determine the author of a work, in order to
determine its value. In this case, I'll quote you the listing from a
recent reference acquisition of mine. You can actually get the same
information I did by researching abebooks and bookfinder.

ELIZABETH and her German garden. [By Mary Beauchamp, later Countess
Russell].......
Ref: Halkett and Laing's Dictionary of Anonymous and Pseudonymous
English Literature, new and enlarged edition, Edinburgh,1926, seven
volumes.

Mary Annette Beauchamp sometimes used the pen name Elizabeth Von Arnum.
and sometimes wrote anonymously. She married Bertrand Russell's
brother, and, when she wasn't writing bestsellers, reportedly had
affairs with Bertrand Russell and wiith H.G. Wells.

Most of her books listed on the web are priced around twenty to thirty
dollars. I did not find any listings of a signed edition of Enchanted
April; however, a bookseller on bookfinder says that book and other
books by Beauchamp are available from him.

Some of Beauchamp's other books were listed on abebooks as "inscribed,"
but the inscription didn't appear to change the price much.

Out of curiosity, which name did the author use to sign the book?

Jerry Morris

Firstly, you can find out about the author (Elizabeth Beauchamp, a.k.a.
Elizabeth von Arnim) here:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://hometown.aol.com/jarmode/vonArnim.html" target="_blank">http://hometown.aol.com/jarmode/vonArnim.html</a>

You can also find the complete text of this book online here:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/arnim/april/april.html" target="_blank">http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/arnim/april/april.html</a>

To get an idea of what kinds of prices her works might fetch, go to
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookSearch" target="_blank">http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookSearch</a> and search under both Elizabeth
Beauchamp and Elizabeth von Arnim. Prices don't appear to be all that high
(though some are into three figures), but I couldn't find any signed limited
editions.

The novel first came out in 1923, and was made into a Miramax film in 1992.
The film was quite successful, and a signed, limited edition of that vintage
(if it is in good condition) is probably worth quite a good price.

Does it have a dust jacket?
