I am trying to remember the name of an Issac Asimov story where it is
in a military setting.... the generals gather around a human who they
say "can do math in his head" (or something)... anyway, the benefit to
this is they can use HUMANS to fly planes and what not....very
ironic... Sorry I am so vague... I just can't remember too much about
it.

Any help would be great!

SHALOM!

"A feeling of power"?
The guy notieced that every time you punched 3x4 in a calculator you got
12 or some such, and went on to "invent" arithmatic.

Is this in the story too: There was also a problem with putting the wrong
end of a self-lighting cigarette in your mouth and it buruning you lips, so they
got the idea of putting the ingiter on a seperate stick. Or was that a
different story?
I'd always considered this to be in "this earth a after everybody forgot"
time but maybe it was a different development of technology story.

Both used the "reinventing the forgotten" idea and I'd smushed
them together in memory... I'm about 95% sure the both are Asimov tho.

they are, indeed. in fact, the one about (re)inventing cigarette matches
has a bunch of other similar (re)discoveries.

Afraid I don't recall the title, though.

Can you recall any key phrases, a few words of some powerful dialogue,
anything like that? If you can put three or four words together which
you are confident appear exactly thus in the story, and if it happens
to be on the Web (as 'The Feeling of Power' is), then it may be
possible to Google the title.

That would be THE FEELING OF POWER
It's in the collection NINE TOMORROWS and I would believe a lot of other
collections.
