Julianne,
John Matthews' book is the size of a brick, but full of really good stuff,
including all sorts of Dark Age poetry that might be relevant - like one
warrior being described as a great hero "although he was no Arthur".
Another possible source, who irritatingly doesn't mention names at all, is
Gildas. Then there's Nennius in the 9th C ("I made a heap of all I had").
Geoffrey Ashe is certainly worth tracking down for the Rigotanus/Avalon
bit - I wish I still had my copy.

errrr, I know that...
You wouldn't believe the # of books I own about King Arthur-- real,
archaeological, historical, fiction, fantasy...
I meant it when I said I am an amateur Arthurian scholar...

Yes, of course. Ray Winstone (formerly Will Scarlet on Robin of
Sherwood) is in it. He's playing Bors.
I'm trying to keep my expectations 'way, 'way down, although Mark Ryan
(aka Nasir on Robin of Sherwood) was sword master, so the fighting will
be good, at least.

If Ray Winstone and Mark Ryan are involved, I'm suddenly much more keen to
see this movie.

Yeah. Gives new meaning to the term "breast band" (ie, bra). Sigh.
Well, at least they don't have her totally painted bright blue and
running screaming and naked into battle....

That was why I said I was holding my expectations 'way, 'way down...

MSNBC's review is funny - it starts out "everyone has their favorite King
Arthur movie. [This movie] tries very hard not to resemble any of them."
Yeah, I think I'll wait for video, too. (I'm still paying off our trip to
see Harry Potter!)

Pity that the rest of the review is, well, lukewarm at best. And the
premise on this one at least has more potential basis in history (at
least as far as Arthur himself goes...)

We're looking to take out a loan on that, now...

He's wonderful and just as crazy in real life as he is in RoS. I had
the great privilege of meeting him a couple of years ago at a Weekend in
Sherwood Convention in Detroit... in fact, the con chair, knowing how I
feel about Ray;s character Will Scarlet, had someone at the door of the
hotel waiting for me to arrive. I have since learned that that person
went screaming down the hotel to tell the con chair when they saw my
shuttle pulling up and Ray Winstone met me at the door.
I was literally unable to think... forget remembering my name; forget
remembering that I'd flown in from Logan Airport, Boston... answer his
polite queries? I couldn;t to save my life! It felt like I'd been
gut-punched. All I could get out was "oh my God!"
I was later told that it sounded like I'd been gut-punched too.
I am still plotting to get back at the con chair...
