There has always been a shared history btw T'Challa and Ororo from her
youth spent travelling the African continent. It has been largely only
hinted at or shown in brief vignettes but the 2 characters played
significant roles in each others development. A lenghty exploration of
that period in both characters lives makes sense given the current
trend of slow burn character origin examination (ie Spider-Woman
Origin) but I have concern for the execution. While Priest mastered
the subtleties of the Black Panther/Storm relationship dynamic in a way
that was suitably understated yet passionate, current writers have made
it far more overwrought for dramatic purposes. Storm exclaiming "You
won't break my heart again!" at BP was far to melodramatic for the
dignity with which their love bond has been shown to have.

Priest wasn't allowed to marry them, back when Storm was worried
that T'Challa was becoming too much like Magneto.

Ya know, there is *NOTHING* at all organic about this -- are they retconning
shared history between the two? (I stopped reading BP when Priest left the
book and I understand the character has been "rebooted" of sorts)

It just makes no sense whatsoever.

It's nothing new that those two met long before either of them became
super-heroes. I do believe that a substantial relationship is a huge
retcon.

I hope T'Challa and Orroro don't marry. I know it's been a long-dead
relationship now, but I'd rather see Storm marry Forge.

Claremont handled that story extremely well and Barry Windsor Smith gave the
tale a smoothness that just can't be matched.

Maybe the story shouldn't be retold because it was such a gem. I find it
interesting that no one has ever really tried to rekindle that flame, but,
ah well.

With her much-storied need for space, I don't know if I ever really saw
Orroro as the marrying type. But I guess even a goddess needs love, too!

The marriage aspect of Priest's use was "You're turning into a
villain. You're a friend. I care enough about both you and the
world in general that I'd marry you to stop such a transformation."

Which was a nice touch. Certainly better than "Ooh, we've got
TWO African characters! Let's marry them off!" (At least we haven't
had "Ooh, we've got TWO African characters! Let's make them
relatives!" yet.)

Well, M and Gateway is considered possible because he watched out for
her and her sisters. But he did the same for Jubilee.

M and Bishop is based on something Bishop said when he saw her. But at
the time he had been knocked loopy and all he really saw when looking
at her was a blur. Of course her brother's power also involves energy
absorbsion and redirection.

Is it a good thing or a bad thing that Claremont made the until now
assumed black guy (wasn't he hinted to be related to Storm at one point)
an Australian in order to connect him to Gateway?

On one hand, he didn't follow the most basic form of the cliche.

On the other hand, it is pretty obvious he did it because of the
cliche, perhaps thinking his was some kind of amazing twist upon the
idea and therefore good.

Indeed. Run some Google searches on "African Amazons." This sort of
thing has roots in many African nations (both sub-Sarahan and not), as
well as other cultures.

Yes, there's a new mini-series due (by Eric Jerome Dickey of all people, which should
generate some interest) where we learn that Ororo and T'Challa have been in love
sense childhood. Too bad she never mentioned it before.

Perhaps she didn't know how filthy rich he is.

Seriously, I'd have more respect for Marvel if BP marries someone, say, more
chunkier than usual.

BTW, didn't BP's mom suggested that he checks out one of his bodyguards?
Talk about tacky.
