I seem to recall a short non-fiction work in which he descibed the perfect
portable AV device; his desciption/revelation was that of a paperback novel.

Anyone remember the title and where/when it was published?

From the FAQ:

The title of the essay is "The Ancient and the Ultimate". It was first
published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in January 1973,
and appeared in the Doubleday collections _The_Tragedy_of_the_Moon_ (1972)
and _Asimov_on_Science_ (1989).

That would be THE ANCIENT AND THE ULTIMATE. Non fiction essay. Don't
remember what book it's from.
