Post subject: Looking for info on publisher Ernest Nister
Archived from groups: rec>collecting>books (more info?)

I have an old children's book published by Ernest Nister in London and
E.P. Dutton in New York. I've been trying to find out when this book
was published. (There's no copyright date printed in it.)

Hunting around the web has produced very little information. I did
find that Ernest Nister died in 1909, but that doesn't necessarly mean
much, as the publishing company could have continued operation after
his death. The Bodleian library has a book of that title, dated 1922,
listed in its catalogue. However, there's not enough information in
the listing for me to be certain that it's the same book.

Does anyone know when Ernest Nister ceased publishing in London?

Or, better still, does anyone have any info on this particular book:
"Laugh and Play"? There's a number "598" on the front cover, which
may help to identify it.

Thanks,
-Mark-

You can search the British Library's catalogue (http://catalogue.bl.uk/)
for books published by Nister and get a list of just under 500. I don't
have the time to look for the last dated in the list, but you may.

The BL's copy is said to be from 1900, but it is impossible to say
whether it is the same as yours.

The BL website was down for maintainence when I posted previously, but
now it's up.

And yes, the 1900 book is the one I've got.

Thanks once again,
