Hi. I'm a writer, and I'm writing articles for a counterculture encyclopedia.
I'm writing about bookstores, but I can't find much. I'm interested in the
history of American counterculture bookstores or alternative bookstores. I have
found bookstores online such as City Lights, but I can't find much about the
overall history of the stores. Do you have any suggestions like websites or
books? Thank you.

In the backs of the Berkeley Barb, the Oracle, or the LA Free Press, you can
sometimes find distribution channels. That might help. However, as there
probably is no copy of any of these still extant on earth, I might not spend
a lot of time on this search.

Hip Pocket Bookstore, partly owned by Ron Bevirt, Prince Valiant, I believe,
in Santa Cruz, CA, in the sixties might fit into your article, and that
establishment morphed into Bookshop Santa Cruz, still in business. If
you're including well-known classics like City Lights, then there's a
possibility on practically every corner in Berkeley. Try Cody's Books.
