I love summertime!

The weather is lovely -- clear and not too hot.

I visited the Farmer's Market this morning. Salad tonight with
ultra-cute, little lemon cucumbers, and good tomatoes, flavorful
and juicy. (Not like the chalky supermarket numbers.)

Followed by strawberries and apricots for dessert. A *lot* of
strawberries -- the baskets I bought at the Market turned out to
be turning from ripe to icky as I trimmed the berries. So what I
thought would be three days of berries turn out to be one
evening's worth (eat now or don't eat at all). Anyone have one
of those 3-in-1 mixing bowls sets? Small, medium, large mixing
bowls? I ate a medium mixing bowl worth of apricots and
strawberries.

With, maybe, a little dish of chocolate syrup, for dipping. It
was dessert, after all.

I feel kinda ill.

But I do love summertime.

Anyone else enjoying some classic summertime fun?

Today I bought cherries, apricots, plums, peaches, stawberries, and
blueberries. I made a flag cake with strawberry filling (iced with
whipped cream, topped with the blueberries & strawberries). We had a
couple of friends over for dinner--beef on the grill, potato salad,
green salad, and fresh corn, followed by the flag cake. Yum!

Not really... moving is never really fun Wink Yesterday, we had some 12
friends here to help to : take boxes from old place, put them in the
lift, take them out of the lift, put them in the truck, drive the truck
here, take them out of the truck, into the lift, out of the lift and
finally into this new flat...

I spent the evening opening boxs to put the content at its place, making
a casserole of spaghetti for those who had given a hand, and cleaning...

And my coming days are going to be: open box, empty box, put box away,
open box, empty box, put box away, ...

Worse is there is a swimming pool for the people living in this building
here, but I've got no time to go there, since we have to give back 50
boxes to the man who lent them to us before the half of this week.

Nope. Cos it's WINTER!!!!! At least, here in the Southern Lands it's
winter.

I've had a busy day. Himself's birthday today so I'm cooking up a
Feast for family and friends to share - Gnocchi Carbonara, Spaghetti
Bolognaise, Sausage Rolls, Home-Made Pizza (2 kinds) Cocktail
frankfurters, etc. Followed by home-made cream sponge cake (with
strawberries) for dessert. Candles and singing, of course. I've got
everything prepared now as far as I can go before the last-minute rush
of cooking so I'm taking a few minutes to catch up on email and
groups...

Welll... get up at 7ish Mon-Fri to drive 18mi up to my internship
where I spend nearly 7 hours in a 20.0C lab, then fight my way through
tourist traffic to get back home. Then on the weekends, I go into my
part-time job for 6,7 hours overall. Can't really say that I'm having
fun, since my damn fool cells are taking the slowest possible route
from California. Now, if Rush would have chosen to play Giant Center
instead of Scranton; my summer would be much better.

Yeah, I know. But my activities yesterday were screamingly summer-ish.

Oh my gosh. I can't even eat most of those items in hot weather, but the
list made me feel hungry. Himself is a lucky birthday boy, to have such a
feast!

Took me a moment to figure out what you meant by a "flag cake". USA flag
'drawn' on top of the cake, in berries, right?

That definitely qualifies as summertime fun. You seem to have purchased a
whole market worth of fruit -- grill, your kids running around, corn...
wow. You got me beat.

I don't own a grill. :< I never want one, except when I hear other folks
describing their BBQ'd meals. I don't like cooking meat, though I do like
occasionally eating it.

Exactly. Although there were only nine stripes on the flag, no one
seemed to mind, and everyone had seconds.

It takes a whole market of fruit to feed my kids! One requested the
apples and peaches, and the other the plums and grapefruit. Personally,
I can never pass up good apricots or cherries, and I needed the
strawberries & blueberries for the cake Smile

Grills are guy things Smile They're really nice to have on hot summer
days, when you don't want to add any more heat to the kitchen.

Sounds depressingly like what I was doing exactly this time
last year. Minus the friends to help, and all the lifts.

There always seems to be a 'catch' to handy loans... but a
loan of 50 boxes? That's priceless, when moving! :>

Good luck with the emptying.

I spent hour and *hours* last week turning my kitchen into a
sauna, while canning apricot jam. Takes forever to simmer
the apricots down, and all the jam jar sterilization by
boiling ... pant, pant, pant.

I have an apricot tree, and I've been doing everything I can
to use up apricots. Made apricot pie, apricot turnovers,
way more apricot jam than I can eat (must give away!), froze
apricots for a later time...

Tomorrow I try apricot smoothies. And probably freeze more
apricot turnovers.

Today, I finally started attacking neighbors when I see
them, and attempting to foist bags of apricots on them.

Not a guy thing. My grill is all mine! And used exactly because when
it's hot, I'm not interested in adding more heat to the inside. Our gas
grill died last week, and I even made the decision to switch to
charcoal. Used it Friday for the first time, and I'll never go back to
gas!!! Chicken cooked over hippie-style real wood (no chemical!)
charcoal is yummy. And lighting charcoal with a chimney-thingy was
fasy, easy, and not stinky. In fact, it was so simple and worked so well
that I want to buy a bulk lot of them and hand them out to all the
apartments in our vicinity. Wink Most of them use entirely too much
lighter fluid, when I can smell it a building or more away! This was my
first time ever using charcoal, so if I can do it, I'm pretty sure
everyone can.

The weather has been amazingly nice lately, hasn't it? Very Happy It's almost
made me forget that the obligatory week or two of 100+ days are just
lurking around the corner.

There's a field nearby (part orchard, part farmland, part roadside stand
selling- depending on the season- fruit, vegetables, firewoods,
pumpkins, and Christmas trees) and there was an entire FLOCK of egrets
in it as we drove past yesterday.

I'm loving all the real tomatoes too. I decided I'm tired of having tons
of work for too little output in pots, so I'm not growing my own this
year and relying on that roadside stand and/or Whole Foods for my
tomato-flavored tomatoes.

Been there, done that, and we're just starting the process of going
through it again. *sigh* But it is very early days yet, for us. We're
in the stage where we're just looking at prices, checking out the
neighborhoods of apartment complexes that look likely, based on their
websites, and pointing out objects whose days are numbered because I am
*not* moving them to the next place. Wink We have just under 2 months
left on the lease, but if things go like they did when our lease was up
in the fall, it will be 2 more months beyond that before they bother to
get together the new lease, and we're looking at Oct/Nov, depending on
what's available and how sick I am of our very loud new neighbors.

Luckily, boxes I don't have to worry about. Since this place has an
attic, when we moved last time, for the 2nd time in 11 months, I
collapsed all the boxes that were in good shape (most)plus we had some
we didn't use, and shoved them into the attic for the next move. They've
been there for over 2 years now, but believe me, if I'd tossed them
again, we'd have needed them sooner! All of the things that are being
stored in the attic are in nice plastic containers, after out great
attic clean-out last summer. I definitely get better at it each time we
move, but I sure do hate it!

We joined a CSA this year - Community Supported Agriculture, where you
pay the farmer for a share in the early spring and get fresh produce
every week from the middle of May through sometime in late fall/early
winter. Late in the season we'll get pumpkins and homemade wreaths.

So far, I've been bringing home at least a pound or two of mixed
greens, some cucumbers, spinach, zucchini (which I give away since we
don't eat it), broccoli, cabbage, snap peas, and fresh herbs each
week. They also have other goodies available for sale such as sour
cherries and brown eggs. Got some lovely fresh beets this past week
too.

We are growing tomatoes, parsley and raspberries again this year. And
we're trying canteloupe for this first time. So far we've got lots of
vines and flowers, but no melons yet.

I'm enjoying being able to toss together a nice healthy salad for
dinner and not having to heat up the kitchen!
