question about memnoch

I have just finished memnoch the devil and I am confused about the part
where Maharet shows up and gives lestat his eye back with the note from
memnoch saying 'thanks for a job well done".
lestat also asks david if he was his fool, and david asks, whose? god or the
devil? and lestat says he doesn't know.

What do you think Memnoch meant by thanking lestat for a job well done? did
he and god make a pact to make sure lestat would get out of hell with
veronica's veil? something like that? still that doesn't seem to make sense
either. Any ideas?

Btw, I DID like memnoch a LOT, but it could be anyone's tale I think, it has
little to do with vampires. Still, I liked it, since I have always been
fascinated with religions and god and the devil myself.

Anyway, I would appreciate any insights. Thanks!

I understood (or at least my interpretation was) that with Lestat bringing
the Veil back that a flagging faith had a resurgence of interest and
believers, and therefore fewer souls ending up in hell, which would help
Memnoch towards achieving his goal...or something along those lines.

Feel free to point out errors in my interpretation ;o)
