Can anyone recommend some modern sf short story writers who explore
similar themes, of memory/identity and time travel, as PKD did? I'm
looking for short stories, not novels.

Thanks!

J.

The only thing that's come out recently was "Soul Pipes" by Ray Aldridge
It was in the December 2002 issue of Fantasy & Science Fiction

There's a bunch of stories that touch on PKD core themes, but this
was the only thing I've read lately that had all that plus the feel

Hope you get more recommendations!

Rick Moody's "The Albertine Notes" has a very strong PKD feel
to it.
It's available in McSweeney's Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales

Thanks! I'll try to look it up.

Although older, J G Ballard wrote many short stories with
similar themes. John Wyndham has a whole book devoted to
short time travel stories 'The Seeds Of Time', also
particularly recommended is a collection called 'Consider
Her Ways [and others]'.

Thanks! I'll see if my library has any of those. I have a book that
has a similar title to "Seeds of Time", but I can't remember for
sure, and I don't know which bookshelf it's on (and don't have time
to look for it at the moment). How many stories are in this collection?
The one I have has only 3 stories - they're long ones. One I remember
is about someone finding a small, transparent cube that had a highly
detailed, 3D depiction of a medieval battle scene. This person figures
out that it's a 3D photograph taken by time travellers, and he eventually
time-travels himself and takes a "photo" of Jesus on the cross, among
other things. Does this sound familiar? If not, then good! That means
there's a new book for me to read. Smile

That sounds rather like "The Marathon Photograph", by Clifford Simak.

YES! That's the title of that story. (I never would have remembered
the title on my own, but since you mentioned it, I do recognize it.) Is
that story in the "Seeds of Time" collection? (If so, then I already
have that book.)

The 'Seeds Of Time' collection is contains short stories by
John Wyndham, not an anthology of different writers...

Well, it could be, I guess - that's a collection I've not seen. As I have
it, however, "The Marathon Photograph" is an actual novel. Granted, a
small novel - about 1/3rd the size of the current mamoths - but a novel,
nonetheless.

Hi,

Maybe I can add to all that has been said Supertoys Last All Summer Long and
Other Stories of Future Time by Brian Aldiss, who is obviously partly
inspired by PKD.
What do you all think?
