Is the mold stil alive?

Ozone will get rid of any mold or mildew. It doesn't damage modern books with
synthetic glues. The amount you need to kill mold or mildew is probably less
than what it takes to erode leather and natural glues in older books but
purists don't recommend it for serious collections.

You can put a large pastic bag around the book and the machine
allowing for a release of the gas but enough to somewhat concentrate it on the
book. It's also great for getting rid of heavy tobacco odors.

You can buy a decent ozone machine with shipping on ebay for less than $50.
Don't overuse it; it's not healthy to be around it directly and the less
expensive machines can break if turned on for a long period of time.

What about finding someone who will let you use their ozone machine, possibly
for a small fee? I have a stinky copy of Spanier's Algebraic Topology and it
isn't worth the cost of buying an ozone machine.

Sunlight for a few days may do it.

For the OP, whose mold is only on the cover, that might work. But if every
page stinks, I don't see how the sunlight can reach everywhere it needs to.

I have on occasion, set the book upright on a table facing S or SW, and splayed
its pages out over a 45 degree angle to let the sun get in.

The ozone, being a gas, has a way of seeping through various
pages. It seems to stick to the book and do its work after the
machine is turned off.

This has saved numerous books from the heavy tobacco odor
you ocassionally find.

As people have mentioned, it's not considered safe to do on old leather or
fragile items.
