For Burroughs, I'd start with Kerouac's On the Road I guess, and then
Richard Farina's Down and Up Book, and perhaps after that I'd go back to TS
Eliots Ash Wednesday?

Hi. Naked Lunch is the end-all and be-all of Burroughs. If you can get
through it you don't need to read any of his other fiction. Junky is a
straight autobiography, not like N.L. Exterminator same. Soft
Machine, Nova Express and Wild Boys weird cut-up books, freaky like
N.L. If you are really interested in what all this is about, get the
books that are essays by Burroughs and interviews with him, in which
he explains his literary and social theories and kind of explains what
these books are really about, though some of his ideas and
explanations are as creepy and weird as his fiction! Enjoy!

Agree that the books like The Third Mind are essential, but you are
missing a LOT if you don't also read 'Cities of the Red Night' and
'Place of Dead Roads'.

Don't forget the third book in this trilogy, The Western Lands.

Also, Junky and Queer, his first books, are more conventional narratives
but still essential Burroughs. Nova Express and The Soft Machine are
extremely difficult - save for later.

C'mon over to alt.fan.william-burroughs, which is getting active again!

I've just been reading The Adding Machine, one of the books "in which he
explains his literary and social theories" and a lot of the technical end of
the tape recorder experiments and such, after having it lying around for
quite a while. One of the most accessible things he ever wrote and quite
interesting if you want to learn how his mind worked. One thing I didn't
know was that he taught classes on writing, his way of course, in New York.
One thing that really got my attention was his analysis of the similarities
between cut-ups, tape recorder experiments, schizophrenic speech, dream
sequences, and an experiment done in England with blank tapes run through
recorders in sound-proof rooms. I had already noticed the similarities
between dreams, schizophrenia, UFO experiences, and hypnosis, but the
addition of the blank tapes puts the whole group of phenomena--or the single
phenomenon--in a whole new light. Quite worth reading. There's also a
peculiar synchronicity between the latter blank tape experiments and some
tests done by one Baron von Reichenbach with women he called "sensitives,"
basically Freud's "hysterics," in completely dark rooms where they saw
various lights coming from objects like magnets.

Sounds something like Eliot's In the room the women come and go, speaking of
Michaelango.
I do not hope to turn again,
