I already know about the reprieve she gave to Arthur Weasley. I admit
it would have been too much to have killed him off, even if many fans
don't love him as much as Sirius, since we'd still be feeling the pain
of all the other Weasleys had that happened. Not to mention the
increased financial burden on them.
What I find very cruel, though, is the way JKR put the Veil in when
she could just as easily have had Sirius fall at Bellatrix's feet -
and then we would all pretty much know for sure, even if Harry refused
to grasp that reality for a short while. What was the point of that?
What, especially, was the point of Luna's remark that "they" were just
behind the veil and that she and Harry would see them again? Why would
JKR have Luna reveal that the mean students always return her things
months later when that clearly wouldn't happen in real life? Unless
that was a clue? Somehow, I can't quite imagine that Sirius'
"appearance" in DH was really what JKR originally had in mind. (I
realize that had Sirius appeared with Dumbledore later on, it would
probably have been too tempting for Harry and he might have stayed,
but still......) What it came down to was that I felt as though I'd
lost Sirius all over again, in a sense.
Not to mention that the last scene with Wormtail somehow doesn't feel
dramatically sufficient when you think of DD's prediction in PoA.
So I can't help thinking JKR had quite different plot outcomes in
mind, originally.
Opinions? Especially regarding the whys and wherefores of the Veil as
a plot device?
Lenona.
