Post subject: What order to read the books?
Archived from groups: alt>books>anne-rice (more info?)

My wife and I are trying to figure out in what exact order to read the
Vampire Chronicles series, along with the New VC, and the Mayfair
Witches series.

I'm currently reading QOTD and my wife is reading Tale of the Body
Thief.

One of our friends mentioned that after Merrick, it is best to read the
Mayfair Witches series, before resuming the VC series.

Here's what I've been able to come up with:

Interview with the Vampire
The Vampire Lestat
Queen of the Damned
Tale of the Body Thief
Memnoch the Devil
The Vampire Armand
Pandora
Vittorio the Vampire
Merrick
Witches: The Witching Hour
Witches: Lasher
Witches: Taltos
Blood and Gold
BlackWood Farm
Blood Canticle

Is this the right order?

Thanks...Brad

Brad,
That may have been the order that Rice wrote them; however, the
Vampire Chronicles series is:

Interview with the Vampire
The Vampire Lestat
Queen of the Damned
Tale of the Body Thief
Memnoch the Devil
The Vampire Armand
Merrick
Blood and Gold
Blackwood Farm
Blood Canticle

In that order.

The New Tales of the Vampires series is:

Pandora
Vittorio the Vampire

In that order. It isn't necessary to read the other VC to understand
the New Tales books.

The Mayfair Witches series is:

The Witching Hour
Lasher
Taltos

In that order. This series is entirely independent of the VC so you
don't have to read the VC to understand them and vice-versa.
Personally, I would recommend starting at the beginning of each series
and reading it through, but that's just me.
While each series is independent of the others. Knowing something
about the Mayfairs will give you more appreciation for the novels
Merrick, Blackwood Farm, and Blood Canticle. The VC will also give you
more appreciation of the book Pandora. Vittorio the vampire is a
completely independent book (and vampire) he has heard of the New
Orleans vampires or, as he calls them, The Coven of the Articulate,
but has never met any of them nor they, him. I hope this helps.
Take care,
Ashe

I would read The Witching Hour here. It doesn't *really* matter,
but it makes a couple of cameos later on more enjoyable.

I would swap the last two. For the most part it doesn't
matter, but present day events in Pandora occur before TVA.

I would suggest reading Lasher and Taltos before Merrick, but
it's not critical. You should definitely read them before
Blackwood Farm, though.

I just started reading them according to the next story line. But I've
stopped after Blackwood farm to read The Witching Hour to get more of a
background on the Mayfair family, but that was just my own preference.

i didn't read them in any particular order, and still enjoyed them. I
think that the mayfair witches books ought to be kept seperate, but
personally i was glad i read them before merrick and blackwood farm. Just
a thought...
