A random train of thought from a small comment about getting together:

Where are people on this newsgroup located? It's obvious that a lot are
in the US because of conventions which have been mentioned, are there
any apart from me in the UK? Europe?

I'm in south-east England (house is in Buckinghamshire, work in the week
currently near Cambridge), and "have car, will travel". Are there any UK
conventions with a Deryni-fan base? Anyone interested in getting
together to chat or whatever?

I'm in California in the heart of Silicon Valley, so I'm afraid a UK
get together is not in the cards for me. There is a certain
concentration of U.S. Deryni fans, but there are still a number
scattered around in the U.K. also.

I'm from Cardiff in South Wales.
About 25 miles SW of Argoed, but a long way from Gwynedd Smile

I discovered the Deryni stories way back in my student days when I was
heavily into that sort of literature (Tolkien, William Morris, E. R.
Eddings, Michael Moorcock, etc.) I'm now a fiftysomething, a computer
engineer by trade, who still maintains an interest in the stories.

I'm not aware of any formal Deryni fan club as such but perhaps this thread
will prompt such a get-together.

My mother is in Gwynedd! And my aunt and sister. Immigrants, not
native. I don't think that Penrhyndeudraeth is a name used in the
books, though <g>. And I have friends who live near St. Neots (the one
in Huntingdonshire, not in Cornwall)...

Heh, I'm fifty and a software engineer. I didn't discover them until
around 1986, when the first two appeared in my local WHS (I'd been
recommended them but since at the time they were only available in
import editions nowhere near me carried them). Then when I went back
for the third and tried to order it they denied that they had any of
them, because they didn't carry imports either! Very strange. I forget
where I eventually got the third.

Indeed. There must be more...

Chris,
I live in Bucks also, in Milton Keynes. I work near where I live, but
often travel to Cambridge to visit son & wife at Uni there.

Scary - I'm 57 and a software engineer (well they call me an architect
consultant, but I'm still a programmer at heart)

I found my first only a couple of years later, around 1988-89, when it was
sold off in a public library remainder sale near where I then lived in
Feltham. Then I started hunting them out deliberately, of course. But I had
no trouble finding further volumes, as far as I recall. They seem to have
been UK-published by then.

I'm in Aylesbury (can say that since it's weekend and I'm actually
there), I know MK reasonably (well, I know Weatherspoons and the
shopping part, and I can navigate using the H/V numbers).

Since I'm contracting I get to be a programmer still, I've managed to
hold out against the people wanting to make me do management things.

Possibly, or by then bookshops were importing more. If you were in MK
then and they had Ottakars they were probably importing US books. I
didn't have anywhere close that did so, although some of the London ones
did (I suspect that I got the third of the trilogy at Forbidden Planet
in London, which certainly did do imports).

Are yours the "trade" editions? As I recall they came out in the UK
around '87. My copies of the second Kelson trilogy are in those, as are
my replacements for the original trilogy and the Camber ones (which I
still have but are tending to fall apart).

My particular speciality is point-of-sale systems. We have many customers
scattered over the UK, and one on the continent (Finland). Nothing in Bucks
at the moment though but if I'm ever headed that way there might be scope
for a meet.

When I was a postgrad student in Bath (mid to late 70's) there was a big
bookshop there with a huge room well stocked with fantasy literature,
including quite a lot of US imports with the DelRey imprint. My copies of
the original Deryni series are from this publisher, along with (later) the
Saint Camber series.

The History of King Kelson series came later, printed by UK publisher Arrow,
picked up at the local branch of John Menzies (remember them?). I've seen
no sign of the Harrowing of Gwynedd series here in the UK.

Derry is not too far from my part of the world. I live in Westminster,
Vermont and have family in Nashua, Bedford and Concord. Also have a friend
I used to visit in Litchfield until he moved back this way a couple of years
ago.

Well that's not much more than a stone's throw from me, or at least it was
when I was younger and had a better arm.

I seem to recall that some of my mother's family lived in Londonderry for a
while. A nice area. You get much the best of both worlds. Not too far
from Boston and the oppotunities offered by a number of larger communities
in the area, yet still kind of small and rural New England.

Oh, I forgot you were out there, Wes! You guys got all the snow you should
have gotten, PLUS what we would normally have this time of year, didn't you?
Hope you are digging out well!
