Post subject: publisher recommendations sought...
Archived from groups: alt>publish>books (more info?)

Hi there,

I am busy working on a needlecraft-related book and I would like some
recommendations of publishers (not e-book, online submission-related or
similar) who are willing to take on new authors. I am after a traditional
publisher really. Any suggestions??

Buy a copy of "Writer's Market 82nd Edition" and read up to page 110.
Then memorize pages 111 through 113. You will then know most of what
you need to know about how a book is published, what book publishers
are looking for, and how to present your book to a publisher. A
professional writer must know these things before she or he sends a
book off to a potential buyer. With 50,000 books published every year,
the competition is very good: your book will have to be better.

Most of the big-name publishers no longer accept unsolicited MS from
writers--- they require that the writer have an agent write a query
letter, submit sample chapters, or the entire MS.

Many new writers seem to believe that publishers will not give a new
writer a "break." That isn't the case: if the writing is very good,
they will consider buying it.

After you have learned what is required to get a publisher interested
in your book, go back to "Writer's Market" and read pages 114 through
323. You will be looking for a listing of a book publisher who
publishes boks related to hand crafts.

In addition to consulting references like the latest
editions of WRITER'S MARKET and WRITER'S HANDBOOK
(another pretty good resource,) you could also, y'know,
do some research on your own...

Go to the bookstore and see what publishers
publish books in the category in which you want to
write. (For needlecraft, I'm thinking publishers
like Sterling, Watson-Guptill, or Krause would
probably publish a lot in that category.) Many
publishers have their own websites which you
can look up. Most publisher websites will include
submission guidelines. If you're lucky enought to
find a publisher that accepts unsolicited submissions,
you can follow their instructions and cross your
fingers.

Also, for what it's worth, a previous poster on
this thread noted that competition is stiff with
50,000 new books published every year. I actually
think that estimate is somewhat low; the number
of new books published per year in the U.S., I seem,
to recall reading recently, is closer to 150,000.

Competition is surely stiff. You'll want to make
sure your book and your proposal is as good
as possible. And even then you'll still need a
little bit of luck.

So good luck to you!
