In addition to consulting references like the latest
editions of WRITER'S MARKET and WRITER'S HANDBOOK
(another pretty good resource,) you could also, y'know,
do some research on your own...
Go to the bookstore and see what publishers
publish books in the category in which you want to
write. (For needlecraft, I'm thinking publishers
like Sterling, Watson-Guptill, or Krause would
probably publish a lot in that category.) Many
publishers have their own websites which you
can look up. Most publisher websites will include
submission guidelines. If you're lucky enought to
find a publisher that accepts unsolicited submissions,
you can follow their instructions and cross your
fingers.
Also, for what it's worth, a previous poster on
this thread noted that competition is stiff with
50,000 new books published every year. I actually
think that estimate is somewhat low; the number
of new books published per year in the U.S., I seem,
to recall reading recently, is closer to 150,000.
Competition is surely stiff. You'll want to make
sure your book and your proposal is as good
as possible. And even then you'll still need a
little bit of luck.
So good luck to you!
