all my life I've said the word pun as if it rhymed with "fun". However, lately I've
heard the word spoken by some guy on a british show and he said the word
as if it rhymed with "prune" (what he said sounded like P-yoon).
Is this a difference between british and american English, or have I been
misspronouncing the word all my life ?

Normal British (via my mother) or Commonwealth (via me)
pronounciation is "pun" to rhyme with "fun". In the absence
of any other information my best guess would be that it's a
Pratchett reference; one of his characters once quite memorably
noted that something was "a Pune or play on words". >> Stay informed about: serious question about puns |

Well, newish rendition (it first aired last December, and is going to air
in the U.S. this month on ION (the former PAX). Right now Vadim Jean is
working on another Pratchett adaptation, this one going all the way back to
the beginning, The Colour of Magic (it's actually a combination of TCOM and
The Light Fantastic).
I'm looking forwrd to it with mingled anticipation and dread. On the one
hand, Vadim Jean did a brilliant job with Hogfather (and Michelle Dockery
was superb as Susan Sto-Helit). On the other hand, David Jason as
Rincewind?
Still, Sean Astin as Twoflower is good casting, and I can see Tim Curry as
Trymon, and they've got Christopher Lee doing the voice of Death, as God
intended (nothing against Ian Richardson, but Lee Is Death)
..
Still

I imagine Google might have more effective information.
I serendipitiously caught an ad while channel flipping the other night. It
said "Sunday" and, I think, "November", but I didn't catch *which* Sunday.
Definitely said 9pm, though. So I've been making sure to check my local
cable stations "scrolling what's up next" channel during the 8pm hour, in
the last Sunday or two.

Also note that ION is not a cable channel (at least in most markets) it's a
broadcast network, the old PAX stations.

Hmm, I wonder if they produced this in HD? I cna pick up our local ION over
the air. . . .
FWIW The Hauppage HVR-1600 works VERY nicely if you have a moderately
powerful ( >1.6 Ghz) system. And is a whopping $99.00 last time I checked.

According to http://www.ionline.tv/schedule.php, it is November 25th, 2007 at
7pm, and it is 4 hours long.
I suspect I don't have to print the summary to the original poster, but for
those curious:
An evil Assassins' Guild plots to destroy human belief in a parallel universe
called Discworld in this adaptation of Terry Pratchett's novel. David Warner,
Joss Ackland, Dominic Borrelli.
Cast & Credits: Joss Ackland, David Warner, Timothy Bateson, Dominic Borrelli
Drama/Special
NR, English, 2007

Such a short little summary to get so much so wrong
For those who haven't read any of the discworld books, go read them, errr,
well, to be more informative...
The discworld is just that, a giant disc shaped world, carried through
space on the backs of four enormous elephants, who are standing on the back
of a far more enormous turtle (Pratchett identifies the turtle, The Great
A'Tuin, as 10,000 miles long).
The Assassin's Guild isn't evil, although some of its members are.
None of the three listed actors are the 'stars' of the movie, David Waraner
playse Lord Downey (head of the Assassin's Guild, a minor role), Joss
Ackland plays Ridcully (a larger role, but not the star), and Dominic
Borrelli plays a department store Hogfather, a very minor role. The main
roles are Death, voiced by Ian Richardson, and his granddaughter, Susan
Sto-Helit, played by Michelle Dockery.
A better summary is
It's the night before Hogswatch and all through the house, not a creature
was stirring. The children were in bed, the trees were covered in
ornaments, but there's on noticable lack, The fat man who brings all rhe
presents.
The bad guys:
The Auditors of the Universe, who find life, especially human life, to be
untidy, and would like to do away with it.
:
Teatime (pronounced te ah tim eh by, well, himself and nobody else) the
assassin who is hired by the Auditors to assasinate the Hogfather
The crew Teatime hires to assist him in his inhumation of the Hogfather
The good guys
Death
Albert, his manservant.
Binky, his horse
Susan, his granddaughter
The Death of Rats
Quoth, the Raven
Other interested parties
Chancellor Ridcully and the wizards of the Unseen University
Violet, a Tooth Fairy
The Oh God of Hangovers
The Hogfather
(the Hogfather is the Discworld Snata Claus, in case you hadn't figured
that out)

I'm keeping my VCR until it breaks, then modernizing. And, with my luck,

Ah, well, I'll be home working that evening anyway, I'm sure. Must see,
