I just started re-reading the Deryni books, because I'm in the process of
making my boyfriend into the newest Deryni fan.

How often do you go back through the books?

I ration myself to not more than once a year, usually starting with the
Camber trilogy around Christmastime (they 'feel' like winter books to
me). I have to ration rereading books, especially series, otherwise I'd
never read anything new...

I hear that Chris. I have so many books on my night stand that I had
to start putting them on the floor. The two bookcases in my bedroom
are stacked 3 deep. I still haven't gotten around to reading "In the
Kings Service" and I'm about to order "childe Morgan." I too enjoyed
reading the Camber trilogy during the winter (maybe because IMO that
trilogy was kind of dark) and am tempted again to reread them but I
have recently discovered Harlan Ellison and just finished "Spiker
Kiss," "Dangerous Visions" and am now into "Again, Dangerous
Visions." I need another couple life times to get in the reading I so
crave and love.

Happy reading.

And you think the Camber trilogy is dark!! Careful with all that Ellison-
depressing doesn't even come close to covering it. I read Ellison when I'm
in danger of getting TOO happy- cures me every time! Wink

Hi Mak:

I remember a long time ago you warned me about my delving into the
works of P.K. Dick. You were absolutely right. I know what you mean
about Ellison but I can't see to get enough of him. Not just his
short stories but his commentary (especially on civil liberty). I'll
probably get over him soon tho cause I go thru phases. Altho, I did
buy his "50 Year Retrospective." <g>

Check the credits on many "Babylon 5" episodes. Harlan was "creative
consultant", and actually appeared in one episode himself.

Oh, I love Harlan! I was (mostly) speaking tongue in cheek, but, yeah, he
does get a bit dark. Someone once said that reading too much Ellison at one
sitting would leave you wanting to open a vein. Lots of people hate Ellison
because he's an annoying little *##@ , but I always found his, umm, acerbic
wit refreshing in a way. Have you gotten Deathbird Stories yet? Lots of
good (but depressing) stuff in there.

Quite true. And probably why B5 was as good as it was- tho JMS was a goodly
part of that as well.

I think I am on my third full reread at this point... this
time, in chronological order. Basically, when a new volume arrives,
I will plow through the preceding ones in the series. So, while all of
you have been reading Childe... I am still doing ...Service.

Cheers,

when you read the DV and ADV series, you might find the Theodore
Sturgeon offering ("if all men were brothers, would you let one marry
your sister") worth some very deem thought

I don't re-read on any regular schedule but have read all the Deryni novels
more than once and have often gone back to some of my favorite books with
great frequency in the past. Of all Ms. Kurtz' work, I find the Histories
of King Kelson most enjoyable and had once re-read them something like five
or six times in a three year period before seeking professional help. It
got to the point where I wasn't discovering anything new with additional
reading so I put them away for several years. The next re-reading was
greatly anticipated and much more satisfying.

Life and work have a way of interfering with enjoyable hobbies and it's been
a while since I last did much more than read the new books in this series as
they came out. I think I might have re-read King Javan's Year three or four
years ago, and I did go quickly through the Chronicles of the Deryni again
last summer before introducing them to a friend, but it's been years since I
really spent time immersed in the Deryni universe.

I'm particularly grateful to DesertRose for starting this thread as it quite
specifically reminded me of what I've been missing. Two weeks ago I started
in on the Histories of King Kelson again and really enjoyed becoming
re-acquainted with an old friend. I think it must have been six or seven
years since my last reading, and I am starting to get a bit older, so there
were a number of satisfying little plot twists that took me by surprise and
delighted me all over again. I haven't quite decided what I might read
next, but I'm looking forward to re-discovering the pleasure of what have
often been deeply engaging and entertaining adventures in the world of Ms.
Kurtz' imagination.

Steve
