I may be burned as a heretic but I find that The Harrington books are not
high on my list of re reads I have read path of the fury 3 or 4 times and
the new version twice yet I have not reread the HH books I am not sure why
that is may be the info dumps in the latter books?

I've come to the conclusion that the Spinoff books in the Honorverse
(Worlds of Honor, Wages of Sin, Shadow of Saganami) tend to be better
than the main Honor Harrington books, possibly because of the massive
extent to which the Honor Harrington character has been developed, and
because Weber doesn't seem to be very good at making new characters
outside of a certain set of molds.

The spinoff books are largely responsible for characters as Victor
"Goldenboy" Cachat, Anton "The Full Nelson" Zilwicki (introduced in a
main HH book, but not fleshed out at all until the 3rd or 4th WoH book),
and Captain Miles "I may sneer, but I'm still a good guy" Oversteegen.

Also, I've noticed that at least in the Honorverse books, Weber likes to
smother you in numbers, as opposed to the "Black Box" tech that some
other writers such as Elizabeth Moon seem to be fond of where they don't
tell you HOW it works, just that it (sometimes) does.

At least Oversteegen was created and fleshed out in a Weber written
story, so he can take the credit for him.

Most writers have problems creating an infinite variety of people. In the HH
universe this may be at least partly due to the class of people most
commonly under discussion.

That makes sense to me. It must take some time to come up with a well
fleshed out, unique character to add to any fictional universe. And adding
new and unique ones to an already heavily populated one must be even more
difficult.

And then add to that, trying to keep track of all of the characters, major,
minor, and throwaways, must be quite a lot of work.

I've just reread all the books from the start all the way through
(excluding shorts and spin offs) for the first time and quite liked it
though the books were different from how I remembered them both in
tone and content - less of the glorying in war and stuff that I would
have said exemplified the earlier books (the rereads were the e-books
supplied on the CD that came with At All Costs).

I actually quite enjoy the info dumps in the HH books though this
probably says more about me than the quality of the info dumps
(they're stil annoying in the Bolo! short stories though).
